Turbo Spooling

Postby done_my way » Sun Dec 07, 2008 5:58 pm

Hi everybody. Newbie here. Dont even have a Cummins yet. But one day... My question is: What determines how quickly a turbo spools up? Now lets just say its on an intercooled 5-speed W250. How does one know what injectors to match to the turbo (or vice-versa) to keep EGT's manageable, or safe? I mean, I know guys who have farm tractors (not pullers) and they are turboed, and they have turned their fuel up. They a work their tractors and have no EGT gauge. And this is over 4-5000 hours of use. Why the difference between a street-driven vehicle an an industrial engine? I am sure its simple, but sometimes I cannot see the forest for the trees. Thanks in advance.

The combination of turbine size and level of fueling.

That depends mostly on what you expect to use the engine for.

How the governor and possibly AFC is set up for the engine's purpose.

Done my way- for the most part, industrial engines see MUCH less HP per cubic inch than a street driven pickup, so they have a larger margin of error than we do when it comes to EGT, etc. THis is mainly because they are designed for a 90-95% duty cycle, not the 25-40% that our pickups are.
