gov. spring questions

Postby Fnschlaud4620 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 3:47 pm

I see that alot of you guys run the 3200 rpm gov spring. I too would like to raise my rpms. I see PDR has a 4200 (PDR20113540) spring for the VE. Can someone explain the pros and cons to the 3200 and 4200, and what each is used for. Also is there any spring in between, like 3600 or so?

Thanks alot

I ran a 4200 spring for a few months. thought it was great, until a couple of weeks ago the governor started acting up(like the throttle was sticking at freeway speeds and sometimes did it driving in town) removed it installed the 3200 and have not had a problem since.
i wouldnt reccomend a 4200 spring.
just my 2 cents :)

I would recommend the 3200 spring, I think the 4200 spring is just a little too much. I think you are out of the engines powerband by that point anyway. I could be wrong, others will chime in...

Don't waste your time with the 4200 spring. PDR should be ashamed for advertising that. It's too long and should be trimmed to the correct length to operate correctly. Key word is correctly.

How do you "trim" a governor spring?

Just cut the spring with some side cutters so there's the same amount of coils as a 3200 spring---and one left over to bend for a new hook.

So the 4200 is a stiffer spring material than the 3200?

Modify the 3200 spring. From my experience, the 3200 is plenty. The modified 3200 is too much. The VE will flow less fuel at high rpm's anyhow.

So how do you modify the 3200?

Without overdrive and with a 3.5-4.1 rear end ratio, I'm not entirely convinced that 3200 would be enough...

You need to understand that when you install the spring AND modify the trucks throttle linkage, you will see more than 3200 rpm's.

The spring is shortened to modify.

Along with this the pump lever will require modification as well and reindexing one notch to gain a manageable slow idle speed.

You asked about a different spring....

3600 rpm is a 082 (460-416-082)
3800 rpm is a 374
4000 rpm is a 008 (460-406-008)

So does it fuel past 3200 or just freewheel past 3200? My stock truck can hit 3100 RPM, it sure ain't fueling at that point though. :x

I just did some pretty extencive modifying to get the pedal to pull farther on the pump. It's still pullin at 3100 with the stock gov spring.
