WHAT TURBO ?????

Postby NYCEGUY01 » Tue Mar 06, 2007 10:54 pm

I need some opinions on a turbo.
I haul around 12,000 pounds of 5th wheel toyhauler with this truck.
Currently I have POD's and a Old smokey pin
Timing is advanced and I have a powerchoke i/c
4" exhaust and a bhaf
366 spring
Truck is a 5speed with 4.10 gears

The current turbo is a hx35/12
Will the htt stage III be a good upgrade ??
Maybe the stage III with a bigger ex housing ??
Would I be better off going with thier s 300 based turbo ??
How about a hx 40 with a 18 or 16 housing ??

I , like everyone else, want more power and I need to keep the egt's down.

OK Experts lets have it.

im no expert but i would say... if you have the money that is, to get a switzer made turbo like the s3 or the htt version. Someday when i get the money i am gonna buy a turbo from htt, good solid turbos that cool stuff down in a hurry

Hx 40 will cool you down but from what I here there pretty laggy. If you can part with the money you wont be disapointed with an s300 based turbo from bd,htt or II. If you call around to some dealers you can get a much cheaper price then advertised by the manufactures.

I would try a bigger exhaust housing to start. That 12 is small for hauling a load. It gives good spoolup. But it is restrictive in a towing app. Which leads to higher EGT's.

I've talked to HTT about situations kind of like yours. I'm going to recommend at least an S300 if not one of their bigger HT71 series. Give them a call and see what they have to say. They'll definately steer you away from just upgrading the compressor.

I actually have to drive right past HTT at least once a week.
They actually were steering me to just the compressor upgrade ( stage III with a 14cm housing )
I think they just dont want to scare me off with the 1000+ price tag on a new complete s-300 based unit.
I see hx-40's here locally all the time for around 500 so thats why I was thinking maybe that route. If it doesnt run good then I still need a turbo and Im out an extra 500.
I had hoped I could throw up a post and maybe learn from all the money others had allready spent. lol
