What HX35 housing will make more HP, 16 or 21?

How to make it go fast

Agreed. As a guy who drives a stick truck in heavy traffic every day, drivability is more important to me than max HP.

3rd gear launch will take a Honda.

Not overdriving it now with the POD's, (then again I haven't put the screws to it) but once I install my Scheid EDM's, it's gonna gain upwards of 10psi of boost. That might be running a little high for a hx35.

I got the die grinder out and gasket/port matched (whatever you called it) the 21cm housing. I don't know why I never did this to any other exhaust housing or manifold I had off.

I tried a 16cm but it was hard to control EGT'S, I switched to a 18.5 ported it and now I can pin a 30 pound boost gage no problem. With the 16 I could only get about 22-23 pounds of boost. It also dropped the EGT'S about 100 to 150 degrees.

I guess I could get motivated and do something, since I'm waiting on parts for the other project . Why can't I pick up everything I need at one place??!!! All this running around town, out of town, Indy etc!! The ole starter gets some use in the auto truck when I do projects on the stick truck. Starting, stopping at all the local junkyards, hardware stores, fitting, plumbing, bearing shops etc..!!

I guess I could do some playing at Bowling Green since I'll be driving the auto truck down there May 11,12. Get these Scheid EDM's in along with the ported 21cm housing. Most likely a waste of time and money, since the slipper auto probly won't put me over 350rwhp.

Stop the insanity!

Well I finally got motivated to play with the auto truck (91). I had to reinstall the leak free intercooler that I stole and installed in the 89. Got the intercooler installed, new silicon boots, clamps, and the ported 21cm housing. With just a couple hot rod bonzai runs, it works as I expected, boost down 4psi at WOT. Seems like it took less time to cool down to 300*. I'll know more once I drive it more obviously. I will have the Scheid EDM's in Friday before Bowling Green. Since I won't have the 89 back together by then, I wanna do some playing on the dyno. Didn't wanna be left out of all the fun. I really wish I had a nice s300 or hx40 to install instead of fooling with this 35.

ok so what is a stock 1996 hx35 housing in size, and what should I expect for boost with the 12, 16, 18, 21 housings should I switch?

96 hx35 stock housing is 12cm on most all B series. General rule of thumb with housings is, you should expect to gain 1psi of boost by each cm you drop in housing size. Or lose 1psi of boost for each cm you gain in housing size. Example, you go from a 21cm housing to a 12cm housing. You should expect to gain 9psi of boost. Or vice versa if you went the other direction.

:D Well I slapped my Scheid EDM's in 8) . It's nice to have extra hot rod parts laying around :P . Let me tell all ya Lucas POD owners, INSTANT SMILES, a set of hot EDM's will give ya. Once again, without changing or modifying anything, POD's out, Scheid EDM's in, I gained 10psi of boost at WOT. Idle haze gone, idle quality better, and much more throttle response off idle. Oh and if you like smoke, I like to call it 'Smoke On Demand'. With tight AFC settings and very stock fuel settings, it just rolled the smoke at WOT. Piers hx35 w/21 housing, EDM's, piston lift pump, 3200 spring, slippery stock auto, HP = :?: :?: :?:

We'll see, hopefully the ole Dodge will make it to, dyno, and get home from Bowling Green safe and sound without any problems.

16 or 21?

Postby bgilbert » Mon May 14, 2007 2:29 am

Well we might never know which one makes more HP, the 16 or 21. I didn't get down to Bowling Green in time to get on the dyno list. I was about 2 hours late and the sign up sheet was full  . Plus things might be changing in plans for this auto truck. I went to the local drag strip Friday before Bowling Green and might be hooked now LOL. I think the next thing to go on this truck is a bigger charger, cancel the hx35 bull. Pretty neat though to smoke the gasser crowd at the strip  . Poured the coals all the way down the 1/8th. It was a spur of the moment deal too, never got to turn it up or nothing. Probly best I didn't with the 35, the pyro was pegged almost instantly. About 32psi of boost in daily driver, very friendly stock fuel settings. 35-21, 3200 spring, piston pump, Scheid EDM's, stock auto and virgin drag racer did 9.64 @ 74.87mph 1/8th.

I don't believe one will make more than the other. It will only serve to change the point which the engine begins to melt down.

I know what you mean by pegging the pyro/HX-hybrid bull. The only time I want to press my pedle down to the floor is when I want to flirt with siezed pistons. However, I seldom do, so I simply cannot justify $1400.00 for a proper turbo that will only serve to allow me to run at WOT for a little longer.......then....what will break next :?: :?

I NEED the $1400.00 to paint the truck which is money WELL spent. Don't look for me on the drag strip untill I win the lotto.
