Call Me A Bottle Baby But It's Nitrous Time!

Postby RSWORDS » Thu Jun 18, 2009 3:40 pm

Well a while back (like almost a year ago) I got a nitrous set-up for my 1st gen. Figured that with the crazy EGT's and gobs of extra smoke I'm getting from the 6x16's, its a good time to get everything hooked up!
Image

Went ahead and mounted it behind my seat, this keeps it out of site of prying eyes and fingers. Also I can reach behind the seat while driving and turn it on for those little spur of the moment thrashings.
Image

Going to use the Cargo Light switch to arm the system, It wont be obvous... Seeing a pattern yet?

The wire to activate the solenoid has to go threw this 15psi Hobbs switch first, This will allow me to arm the system and it will come on when I hit 15psi.
Image

For now all the under hood stuff is out in the open, this will change when I get either an air to air or air to water. I'll run the braided line threw some heater hose to disguise it and hid the nozzle underneath.

Now all I have to do is say a quick prayer, get the bottle filled, and let her eat!

I'd get a big nitrogen, oxygen or welding gas bottle and use that.

Bigger, cheaper, and dumb people wouldn't think it could be NAWZOXERS if it's not in a "NOS" bottle.

Here a question. Should I still advance my injection pump one tooth? I'm thinking that I'll get to much timing and REALLY hurt something. Maybe I'll just shove it to the head.

I'd even be hesitant to push it to the head unless you're full and ready to replace a headgasket.

To the head is less then jumping a tooth. And I'm already practiced up on changing head gaskets. :D

I'd either leave the timing where it's at or shove it to the head. My 448 was just with one stage, 950 psi bottle pressure, and a -3 line.....lot more in it, nitrous wise. Back in the day Harvey from J&H made 630 rwhp with a p-pump and lots of nitrous on his green ramcharger, and that was only with 13 deg of timing. Head gasket lasted for two years on stock bolts.

Do you have a bottle heater? What kind of line will you be running from the solenoid to the nozzle? What kind of orifice does the nozzle have? Only reason I ask is that before I had my bottle pressure up, and had the smaller nitrous works solenoid, I could barley tell the nitrous was coming on. Now I have a .125 solenoid, -4 line with a -3 end, and a .157 nx nozzle, and now you can sure tell when it hits 8) What jet you planning to run?

-4 line -3 from to the nozzle, Gonna start with small jets and work up. Jason How do you like your external gate? Looking at doing the same thing. Were did you get it from?

Mine is off of Harvey's Ramcharger at J&H performance. He rigged it up by welding a Tial gate to a stock manifold, it will probably crack someday, but hey, I'll run it until then. I also don't know how I like it because I haven't got it to work properly yet. I was relying on drive pressure alone but that doesn't look like it is doing the trick so I am going to have some boost reference lines put in, just no time right now. I think Dr.Performance has a real wastegate that is part of a spacer plate from the manifold to the turbo. Also my 38mm is a little small, if I had to do it "right" I'd say 50mm or bigger, but hey, I couldn't say no to free. I also know that Chad at Diesel Performance Unlimited also has wastegated stuff, might want to give him a call. A wastgate is always a good idea, a big stage of nitrous will DOUBLE your drive pressure!

Thanks for the advice Jason! I really do need a wastegate setup before I spray this thing. Even with my wastegate rod unhooked so that it was always open I could get 50psi out of my Silver 62 (spool up was non exsistent but it still did it  )

Yeah I hit 56 psi so far with my compressor upgrade when the wastegate didn't work as I had planned. Turbo is still in once piece, although I don't reccomend anyone else doing it. I think it survived beacause it hit 56 psi at only about 2700 rpm, so shaft speed probably wasn't that bad. A turbo has to spin a lot faster at higher rpms to create the same amounts of boost.

So its all hooked up, got a 83 jet in it... and this thing sounds plain NASTY!!!! and thats with only 700psi of bottle pressure. Gonna be on Daves dyno saturday in NC at the extreme dyno day so I will let your know how it turns out!!!

Good luck. Be sure to get there EARLY!! Sign up on the dyno sheet as soon as you get there!! Knock people over if you have to! Move BI**%^CH~! etc etc.

This is only if I'm not there. If I am there, just sit around, wait, spectate, then watch me walk up and sign up on the dyno sheet then say to me, oh, is that where I'm supposed to sign up? 8) LOL

Good luck! Wrap a coat around the bottle before you go, or put it on your floorboards with the heater on, over the exhaust, etc. :D I gained a lot (50 hp) on bottle pressure!
