Shut off solenoid??

Postby seeker1056 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 6:57 pm

Ok so after about a dozen full boost runs I have two issues

One is that the shutoff solenoid has quit working and the other is at 60 psi boost I am pukin a lot of oil from the vent tube

Shut off solenoid? what is causi nthis to happen, as one self destrucked on the test bench as well
How do i safely bypass it and use the mechanical shutoff? Can I just switch over and leave the damaged solenoid in there, as it still opens fully

Is the blowby from high boost bad rings or inherent in a motor with high boost like our old gasser motors?

Thanx

shut off solenoid: http://1stgen.org/viewtopic.php?t=3592&highlight=shut+solenoid
Set of bigger injectors(DDP IV's), and a new solenoid, beating on it for 2mos n havent had another problem with it

Seeker, are you running an intercooled or non I/C engine?

The intercooled trucks have smaller injectors, so when you crank the pump up, it puts a lot of pressure on the solenoid. That is what usually leads to blown solenoids. It happens on Non I/C trucks as well, but I believe it is more common on the I/C trucks.

An easy fix is bigger injectors to relieve some of the pressure. You can also turn the pump down, or just install a manual shut off cable in the cab.

You can't be running stock injectors on your puller right? 91 cummins has it right, I've never heard of them failing when running big injectors. Just run a pull cable to the fuel shutoff on the side of the pump, I just left mine in after it went out but you might want to check and make sure no shredded rubber went into bad places. For the blowby you can get valve cover breathers. Here's a pic. It sounds like it's a common deal on high boost engines, but I don't know too much about it.

I forgot he was building a puller engine. I guess the 60psi should have given it away.

6 by 18's are very big injectors lol

turnin down the fuel isnt an option lol

so why do the solenoids fail?

I've never heard of a solenoid issue with 6X.018's.

The extra fuel rushing by the rubber plunger wears and knocks chunks off it.

edm'ed 14mm head too

so is there a cure for the solenoid?

I would rpefer to have it rather than a mechanical shutoff

I shouldn't say this, but funny how kta and I have never had a shutoff solenoid problem. Big power and key on/off, no pull cable  . Problem seems to come from the fuel screw turned in too far.

Oil puking issue. Do you have any additional crankcase venting, such as a valve cover breather or timing cover breather, such as a 24 valve breather etc? Additional crankcase venting might possibly cure this issue as long as you don't have any other problems inside the motor.

Thanx Bill

Mmmm nope no additional; venting - but will be by the end of the weekend

fuel screw turned in too far? I still have two full turns left?????

mind you the inlet of my 14mm has been edm'ed considerably for more fuel flow.

did I read on the forums here somewhere where the rubber tip was sanded down to a cone so the fuel couldnt grab it so easily?

According to BC-David, the rubber tip on the solenoid is pressed onto a steel tube. If you sand the tip of the solenoid down, flat, until the steel tube is showing, then it won't rip and will still work.

I cut, drilled and soldered my shut-down solenoid to make a case pressure sender, and then installed a shut-down cable. Now I can pull up to the gate, remove the key chain from the ignition, open the gate, get back into the truck, and drive it inside, without killing the engine. I can also start the truck, take the battery out of the truck, put a dead battery into the truck, and then drive to charge that battery. There is no longer any electrical problem that can kill my engine, and I never have to worry about the solenoid when I'm diagnosing a fuel problem. And I can't be hurting fuel flow into the head by not having the plunger in there. I like it the way I have it.

I never heard of anybody installing dead batteries in their vehicle to charge them while driving before.
