Personally, I think if you are going through the trouble to intercool it, you might as well go with the better intercooler, which would be the PowerStroke cooler.

I believe the years are '99-'03 7.3 intercoolers. You'd probably have some good luck finding one on a PowerStroke forum, or a junkyard.

If you can't find a 7.3 intercooler, you could go with a 2nd Gen Dodge intercooler. They are almost the same size, and one shouldn't be to much harder to fit than the others.

I think Richie had a good write up for a 'Stroker install on an '89. I'll find the link.

An intercooler from a 6.4 Powerstroke is probably going to be too large to fit behind the grille on the truck. Same deal with a 3rd gen Dodge intercooler. It is too large to physically fit in the space available. The 2nd gen Dodge or 7.3l Powerstroke (get the one with aluminum end tanks, not plastic) are the ones that fit better. Not well, some mods are needed, but they can be made too work.

i'll add this , a 3rd gen is too wide to fit between the frame rails on a first gen .
i got one and couldn't make it work without butchering the frame up .

I fitted my 2nd gen cooler without having to cut up the front grille.
Fitted it in the engine bay and just cut out for the air to flow to it.
Plumbing was what took most time and theres no space for a cooling fan, but i fitted a aluminium radiator to fit as the original radiator looked stupidly small behind the intercooler.
