Turbo sizing and questions.

Postby PRINCETON_JAKE » Sun Jan 17, 2010 4:36 pm

Right now my truck has the stock turbo, its a 92 innercooled, 21cm exhaust housing. What size would the exhaust and intake wheels be? I want to change the exhaust housing, I have a 18cm non wastegated and a 12cm wastegated on the shelf, but i also want to upgrade the intake side, from what i have found, there is a 58mm and a 60mm available. What is a good combination for my truck? right now i can hit
24psi max, and 1400 degrees. I dont tow a lot, but when i do its usually big mud trucks. I also have bad compressor surge right now.

A 16cm exh hsg will get you your best boost vs egt on a hx35/h1c turbo. As for your surge problem putting a bigger wheel in it will make it WORSE! Surge means the turbo is pumping more air to the engine than the engine can use. The H1c's do not have a Map Width Enhancment grove cut in them like the Hx35's do. If you can find someone with a lathe and a hx35 to measure off of you can cut the MWE grove in your compressor cover and eliminate your surge issue.

Do any of the aftermarket compressor wheels/housings have the groove in them? Should I get a hx35, and forget about the H1C?

Yes, the H1C 60mm upgrades have MWE slots. Mine doesn't surge at all with a 12cm non-wastegated ex housing up to the max of 30psi I've seen out of it.

I got the 12cm housing on today, wow what a difference, instant spool compared to the 21cm. The only problem I have is the down pipe is toching a metal coolant line, next to that big heater thing. Whts that thing called? I'm also putting on a single stack tomarro.

That line goes to the trans heat exchanger. Better move one or the other or it'll get ugly. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
