Powerstroke I/C Performance Questions

Postby Collers9640 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:50 am

I have a question about the 7.3 powerstoke intercooler mod. Does anyone know if this will give higher boost and better mpg.

most of the time whin you increes the size of the IC you will get lower boost PSI and cooler air

I dout that you will get MPG becouse this IC upgrade will lower the max power out put so you will end up mashing the skinny peddel more offton

this is a good upgrade for those looking for more power becouse they can add more boost and more fuel thus = more power

You're right about lower boost and cooler air. Which means less restriction and more power. And theoretically better mileage if driving habits remain the same.

It won't lower power output. :D

hey-Hey!!!,
An intercooler is worth about 10% increased FE numbers. Back in school we built a series hybrid drivetrain into a Suburban. We did a bunch of sifting through engine maps and the intercooled ones burned about 12% less fuel( the same motor, just optioned differently ). You're looking for a larger difference between the temperature of the incomming air v. the outgoing for maximum efficiency. Better compressors also help reduce heat generation( the map shows efficiency; lower numbers mean more energy is delivered to heat the air over the adiabatic effect we use in leiu of spark plugs ).
cheers,
Douglas

Your MPG's might be better, but merely driving styles can vary that so much, you may not notice. Douglas is correct that intercooling increases efficiency, but if you are merely upgrading your I/C, there will not be a 12% gain there.

Boost is just a number, Air MASS is what we're interested in, and that will be increasing. Going back to good ol pv=mRT we can see that if temperature decreases, so will the pressure (or the volume in a different circumstance, but that is not the case).

So you may have less PRESSURE, but the mass of air going into the engine is the same, or higher than before, and also cooler. Apporximately every degree you knock off the intake is approximately 1 degree knocked off your EGTs. Judging by putting my hand on the hot/cold side of my intercooler, I'm dropping 100-200 degrees F I bet!

I have a hard time hitting 1200*F even when accelerating up a large hill while towing an M1028 behind me with 35psi of boost.

Thanks for the help. The highest EGT i've seen is 900 when theres a 118 heat index outside while im tromping on the pedal.
