ASAP 97 3500 4x4 cummins

Postby Bad93Cummins » Fri Aug 20, 2010 9:40 pm

Going to go probley pick it up tommrow, trading my built 94.5 F350 powerstroke for it. I had a built 93 cummins so I have an idea what to look for, is there anything special to look for on a 97'? Guy said radio stopped making sound, abs tried coming on so he took abs fuse out and o-ring went bad on powersteering hose.

Thanks

Here's some info:

Just look for the usual stuff. Rust is a huge issue on all our trucks (depending on where you live) and I'd ask if he's done anything with the KDP as well.

I'd try and get more information on the "monster" tranny as well. What exactly has been done to it?

I guess the montor tranny was a whole replacment tranny that suppose to handle a good amount of power/tq. He say's he has all the paper work on it.

Paint looks a little rough but other than that she looks good. I've always liked 4wd, 2nd Gen Duallies for some reason. What are your plans for this truck?

Ya ima paint her up, paint aint as bad as it looks in pic's. Plans: Fix leak on steering pump, probley bad o-ring, fix sloop in steering,. Also need tranny looked at, has brand new tps sensor but on the 30 mile ride home doing 70 for about 20 miles it came out of OD twice but real quick popped out then went right back in and it seems like you gota kinda let outa the throttle a bit to shift, but not to bad. Then he was saying it shift alittle early when hauling a load(shifts at 1500), so going to get that checked out and 4 new tires on back, has new tires on front. Then DIY intake, 5' straight pipe, already has that monster tranny(put in in feb. '10, has reciepts), tranny temp, boost, egt and fuel pressure, has holley blue fuel pump but probley get an air dog 150gph, then 3 gsk, turn up pump just a bit, paint, and that'll be it for now.

That is quite a list.

What color are you going to paint it? Be sure and keep us updated with the progress. :D

If its fallin in and out of gear check for slack in the throtle braket. The rod that sticks inside the tps can wiggle around and give false readings. Or the ears are worn that contacts the tps and are not twistin it as far as it needs.

Sweet deal thanks man, will be checking that!! I also think one of the joints are broke on the steering shaft, as if you turn the wheel while sitting it'll make a pop noise and the steering wheel will be in a whole different spot then the wheels.

Get a friend with a scanner, set the TPS to 1.5 volts (or close to it) You may have to grind the bolt holes to twist it far enough, and set the TV cable so the slide just touches the pin. I had to bend my bracket on the trans end to get enough because the cable stretched a little.
On the steering, check the trackbar where it mounts to the frame. If it's bad, either get the 3rd gen upgrade by BD, it's about $430, or if funds are low, get a Lukes Link, $70 (make sure it doesn't have a moog track bar, the Link won't work with them). Don't waste the money on a new stock track bar, they're junk.
Good Luck with the new ride!

Ya im going to head over to the tranny shop and have them check the tps, its brand new so im sure it just needs to be set correctly.

Ya turn's out the bolt came out of the trac bar where it attached to the axle, saw it today when I got home from work(I drove another car to work and the truck stayed home), so we got a nice grade 8 3/4" bolt in it now and its perfect now!!

I wish I could have fixed my track bar that easy and cheap! :(

Jeff, if he brings it to SOP maybe you can have Bill look it over for ya. Then you'll be $20 richer and have the nice blue pallet!

Oh, wait! Bill will have $20 and you'll have the pallet.
