More turbo q's

Postby NYCEGUY01 » Sat Jun 23, 2007 3:49 pm

Im currently rinning a HTT HTBG. It has the 57mm comp wheel and the wastegated 14cm housing.

Right now with the pods, maxed pump etc.. the egt's are still too warm for serious towing. I was gonna send in the turbo for an upgrade and they said I could go with a 62mm or a 64mm or possibly even the 66.

I know some of you guys here have ran several combos so what should I do.

Without the valet switch I can fog out 4 lanes of traffic and watch the pyro go right past 1400 and the 35 psi boost gauge will be pegged. With the switch temps are good and smoke is managable and the boost stays around 24-30 max.

Oh its a 5sp manual with 4.10 gears.

I guess what Im asking is what have you run and what are the positives and negatives ?

Should I be doing the upgrade or is what I want only doable with twins. I can build the pipes pretty easy and maybe use the turbo I have and just add the big bottom one ??

Lets hear some educated guesses.

Towing with PODs?

Postby Ace » Sat Jun 23, 2007 3:59 pm

That just doesn't sound like a good idea to me, with any turbo setup. Is it possible it's just the PODs are the problem?

I dont know. Are the PODS the problem ?

Im shooting for around 400hp that I can actually use.

The PODS I got a screaming deal on so I went with them.

Im not afraid to throw some more money at it I just want to throw it in the right direction. lol

Forgot to add the bhaf ,the old smoky pin, and the 4" dp feeding a 5" straight pipe. Also all i/c tubes are 3" with a powerstroke i/c.

Heres the Money Pit. Not the usual 1st gen. LOL

What are u running for EGT's?
A 62 would be adequite. And u will be able to fuel it too. Keep yer 14W/G for sure. Just get the 62 compressor.

I didnt realize u had it in a 90's chevy, thats a nice clean install. Im going to have a million questions for u now, u shouldnt have posted the pictures!

Im acctually looking into a Chevy/cummins conversion for my spare motor.

Where r ya from anyway?

Im in northern Utah.

Egt's are the problem. If I get in it much in 4th or 5th gear it will hit 1400 pretty quick and then I have to get out of it.
The truck pulls pretty hard I just need to cool it off for towing duty.
Im trying to stay away from the water/meth. I might go there but only as a last resort.

Try advancing your timing some more too, that should help with the egt's.

Pressure test your intercooler and intake system. After that, get your injectors pop tested. Your screaming deal (I assume low price) may have had a reason. PODs are far from ideal for automotive applications in our engines, and then you add the possibility of function and wear, and you get real hot and smoky.

PODs are brand new, only used in my motor only for about 2500 miles so far. There are no leaks in the system, I have checked it.

I stoped by II today and the turbo guys werent there yet. ( I was there at 7:45 am) Talked about injectors and they recommended swapping out to a set of thier 230hp sticks. Price seemed fair at 300 w/stockers exchange.

Anyone here ran them ? I have a buddy rinning 435 new era's and he seems happy but hes not towing anything either.

Once the boost comes up for a second it will clear most of the smoke but the temp skyrockets.

I have been recommended by HTT to upgrade to the 64 compressor wheel as they say it will give me more air at the lower rpm to help clear the smoke earlier.

I just want to go with a good tested setup. Everyone I talk to tells me this or that MIGHT work but Im not sure on that old motor. LOL

Like I said before I dont mind spending the money but I only want to do it once.
