Will a 12 cm w/g housing exhaust as well as a 18 cm housing?

Postby Begle1 » Sun Jul 08, 2007 9:57 am

I was putting my pump back together and realized that I forgot the idle screw. So the solution was to turn the fuel screw up to the point where I didn't need the idle screw.

Would a 12 cm housing with a wastegate be better able to manage EGT's as an 18 cm housing? Or is it possible to overwhelm the wastegate with a maxed pump and stock injectors?

You might be right on the edge with that. If you go with a 16 housing you get good spool, but not quite as fast. If you go bigger or have to tow anything it will not be as restrictive.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

If you're OK with the spoolup, stick with the 18 unless boost is over 35 psi.

I can just peak my 35 PSI boost gauge.

So if I were to go to a 12 cm w/g housing, I would overwhelm the wastegate and see higher EGT's and boost at the top end?

You'd see a little more EGT with the wastegate working. With it blocked EGT and boost would be higher. It sounds to me like your setup is pretty well balanced right now with the 18.5.

With the wastegate blocked the EGT's would be totally unmanageable, right?

Wasn't there a How-To on drilling out the wastegate to make it flow better? I'd really like the fast spool-up, if for no reason but to control my smoke.

Without the wastegate you'd see 40+ psi of boost, which is just going to be hot air.

To wastegate all 6, just grind a notch in the divider or drill a hole in it through the wastegate port.

Wouldn't a notch or hole reduce the top-end restriction back down to 18.5 cm levels?

No. All the exhaust still has to pass though the little slots by the turbine.

If you are wrapping the engine higher because of a GSK, I think the 12cm would get very restrictive.

I burn 75% of my fuel at speeds above 65 miles per hour, so I probably shouldn't get the 12 cm housing...

So what are my alternatives? An external wastegate in addition to the one on the housing?

At your altitude I would think a 16cm would work best.

Stick with what you have and bump the timing some.
