Big fuel fittings at factory filter mount/cylinder head

Postby bgilbert » Mon Jul 09, 2007 12:05 am

Trying to put together a fuel system on my 91 using the piston lift pump. Since the majority says I should have a filter AFTER the mechanical lift pump, I'm thinking of other ways to plumb in a filter. I don't really have room for the filter and filter head I want to use under the hood. FS1212, the filter I use on my 89's system. It's about 7" long. Since the key is to get rid of the restrictive banjo bolts, what about drilling and tapping the two holes in the cylinder head where the banjo bolts go at the filter mount and replace them with say 6an x 1/4npt fittings? Then -6 hose from the outlet of the lift pump to filter and out to the inlet of the VE. Will the longer filter FS1221 flow enough fuel ? Has anyone drilled and tapped there before?

I am not for sure on this but I think that you can get fittings that are the same thread as the bango bolt that hace barbed ends on them for hose. try http://www.mcmaster.com

Bill, you can get -6 AN x 12 - 1.5 mm fittings that thread right in where the banjos came out. Or did you want bigger fittings than that?

I think that if you just thread something else in the existing holes you would not gain anything. I would drill and tap it to whatever size you think that you need Bill, just make sure you rinse it out good before replacing any plumbing or filter.

Well, I wonder what ID 1/4npt is...??

Tim, I figured I'd get rid of the fuel heater to not restrict fuel flow and maybe then the oem filter boss would be close to the flow of a remote filter head. Now the filter fs1221, flow on that is another story.

I just measured one and it's about .200"..both the inside of the threaded part and the hose barb.

If you're ditching the fuel heater, why not change over to a 2nd gen 12 valve filter? All you'd have to do is change the spud.

Dave, I'll be changing the filter adaptor, but not to the fs1253 (2nd gen 12v) style. There's a part number floating around of the adaptor that eliminates the fuel heater and you still can use a stock filter or the long version fs1221. About $15 from the blue C.

But.... I got to looking, and it looks like if I get someone to fab me a bracket, I can use my bigger filter fs1212. Come off of the throttle bracket, have the filter hang between the intercooler pipe and brake master cylinder.

At least for now, I think I'm gonna get the supply line run between the tank and lift pump, thats easy. Then if I get motivated, I'll do the upgrade fuel line between lift pump and VE.

I drilled and tapped mine. I forget what size I used at this moment but I know it was atleast a 3/8npt. I took it all off now thought because Im just using a remote head.
Heres couple pics, sorry they are blurry

I used 1/2npt rubbber fuel hose so judging by those pictures I used a 3/8 to 1/2npt reducer going into the stock filter head
