Cummins Swap

Postby Fordguy100 » Wed Dec 22, 2010 5:11 pm

This is without a doubt the best first gen site. So now for some questions and comments.

I drive an 85 Ford, ad just bought a late 91 cummins motor. Head is at the machine shop, and will do some basic
maintaince to the long block.

I have read SDX injectors are decent. I am going back and forth between 5x.012's and 5x.014's. My Turbo IDI has it's pump maxed out, but EGT's rarely go over 1000* which is really nice. It seems it's real easy to peg a cummins pyro.

Anyways I plan to adjust the pump to near run away
injectors
bump timing
M&H fuel pin
M&H timing spacer
some sort of intake
straight pipe 4" exhaust (what's currently on the truck
mininum of a smaller exhaust housing.

With this setup, what should I expect powerwise. I don't want anything crazy, 250hp and 600ft lbs would be great. Truck will have a ZF-5 speed swap (trading my ATS turbo kit from the IDI for a complete swap).

I will get pics of my conversion later on. Thanks or the help!

I guess I should also ask about turbo's. Since I kinda worry about EGT's...it would seem that a small exhaust housing would cause a restriction in te upper RPM's and cause high EGT's. I hear a lot about a HE351CW swap, but a 9cm^2 housing seems small. Would a HX40 be better suited to keep EGT's down?

You will also need a lift pump, stock will not keep up and I would recommend a 366 spring. Out of the turbos you listed the HX40 is your best option but there are a lot better out there think most like the s300. I still like my he351ve and want to try the he431ve.
Horsepower varies greatly but my truck dynos at 230hp before I changed the turbo and I still have stock injectors.
soon to be 1985 Chevy crew cab with 93 cummins running gear
weeping head gasket
4" straight pipe
M&H M3 fuel pin
M&H Dynamic Timing Advance
366 spring
Full power screw bottomed out no runaway
Auto Meter EGT and Boost

For a turbo, expect to spend about $500-$1000 for a nice one to keep up with the 5x14s.
