Since my lathe is big and the thread pitch is fine I then determine the proper depth of cut to cut the thread minor diameter. Then you set the minor diamter at the end of the part close the half nuts on the lathe, let it cut the length of thread you need then back the cutting tool out really fast at the end of the cut and simultaneously open the half nuts to keep the table or curtter from crashing into anything. Cutting up next to the chuck like that is always fun! Good thing is you can do this with the lathe turning slow so reaction time isn't real critical. You can also cut internal threads by this smae method, but I find a tap is easier.

Mine was 370cc at 2,500rpm and full de-fuel by 3,900rpm, although I am too scared to spin it much past 3,500.
