366 is In

Postby rebel horseman » Sat Jan 15, 2011 4:07 pm

Well with a little help and a second attempt at fixing my truck, the 366 has been installed. While I was in there I turned my star-wheel 90* from the bottom and backed off on the 'moke screw a little. I'm actually fueling less than before but the seat-o-the-pants dyno tells me that my low end power has come up significantly. Don't know how that happened but I like it a lot. Power comes on instantly and is much smoother, whereas before it was laggy off idle and didn't come on until about 5 psi.

If you're looking for a cheap (but somewhat pain in the rear) mod for your truck this is the one.

Hat's off to D for coming and lending his expertise!

The starwheel and smoke screw adjustment are what helped the spool up. ;)

Nope, the 366 did it. A 90* turn on the star wheel amounts to almost nothing, and backing out the smoke screw decreases lower boost fueling. ;)

I am speaking from experience Pete. Backing out the smoke screw helped spool up with a deep cone grind. The turbo lights better at 7 psi now than when it was lower and lighting at 12psi.

And by lighting, I mean it was moderately slow to get up to 12psi, then rocket to 28psi. When cruising @ 70mph, I have 7-8psi of boost. Just a small foot adjustment and its 28psi now. Before, you can count nearly 2 sec before it would hit 12psi then rocket off to 28psi.

Just my experience.

It's interesting that my peak boost is down slightly. Staying into it all the way to 3000 I only can see 19 or so and it's not spooling as quickly, meaning that the needle is not flying around the dial like it did before. Used to, in 4th gear at around 2000 RPM I could punch it and the needle would instantly fly to 15 and climb to a peak of 20-22 depending on how cold and dense the air was. Now it'll hop to 15 and take it's time easing toward 19ish. The power is there and it can be felt and it'll easily pull to 85+ MPH now.

It also should be noted that I still have my old DennyT Stage 2 pin in it, which is one of the ones with the soft metal and divits in it from wear. A new one is coming and I will adjust it then but I can tell for sure that I'm not getting to the deepest part of the pin. Also, I had to replace my fuel pin (the old one was buggered up) and in putting everything back together, it's possible that my fuel pin is not as far in as it was before.

All in all, my off the line power is dramatically increased, but smokyness is gone and boost is down. Going to pick up my 5th wheel tomorrow and that will be the determining factor as to what is different and adjustments will be made from there.

waz up man. had a ball saturday morning. its always cool to work on one for fun rather than need. i think once you get the new pin in and make your adjustments to match it'll be very comfortable to drive under load.

did you get the 5th wheel?

Yep went to get it yesterday. It's a big 31' Prowler, dry weight of just under 8000. With the setting we had it pulled OK, but I didn't get on the interstate at speed. The tires were pretty bad so I eased down 190 at 45 to limp home. Definitely need a little more fuel screw and some other tweaking. But it ran great and the drivability is infinitely better.

rebel, as a rule of thumb (IMO) if u change you screw setting its going to change everything else at the same point, like pete said it takes alot of change to feel anydifference from the starwheel, (360 degree rotations are good), ur mpgs are going to hurt if your starwheel is way down and your towing, but at the same time its going to act super laggy if you thread the starwheel way up and try to tow.

in my experience ive noticed that there are so many factors that can change after an adjustment, just gotta keep playing with it

also, keep in mind you can play with the smoke screw to change your "no-boost" fueling, if you screw down a bit you will have the pin depressed to where the truck gets more fuel even with no boost, that helps spool a bit but can get smokey realy fast, like having no afc at all

I did before I put the spring in. I had the fuel pin screwed in to the collar but it got mangled so when I did the spring this second time I replaced the pin with a new one guesstimated at where it should be. I can tell that it's farther out than what it was before the work because mid and high end power is lower than it was and I can't smoke as much as I used to. I may play with it this weekend and see if I can get it back where I had it.

It's what determines the total amount of fuel that goes to the injectors, screw it in to push more fuel. It's on the rear of the pump, it has a tiny hex head, think 5/32, on the end and a jam nut, 7/16 or 1/2 I don't remember. You'll know it when you see it.

If it's never been played with, it will have a sheet metal cone on it. A tamper cap, so "THEY" know you've been playing with it. ;)

The screw is somewhat hidden behind the electric fuel shut-off solenoid. Look over the throttle and peer behind the solenoid and you should catch a glimpse of it. It's located on the engine side of top of the pump.
