intercooler and fuel pin questions

Postby Deathrod » Tue Jan 25, 2011 5:42 am

First off I am putting a 1991 non i/c motor into a custom built 1930 Model A. I already tweaked the pump and added 366 spring spring before i pulled the motor. Since the motor has been sitting in the car I added an he351ve. I plan on a fuel pin and dynamic timing kit once i have it running.

First question is about intercooling....I know it is better to have an intercooler but the problem with this set up is if i run one it will sit behind the radiator and probably have to be a smaller one (like 25"x12"). ...will the hot air comming of the radiator make the intercooler useless?

anyone have a clue approximately how hot the air is leaving the turbo and how much an intercooler atually drops the temp? I know it depends on set up, boost etc...but is the compressed air like 150 or like 400 degrees?

Second question is about fuel pins...this car will probably weigh in the ball park of 3500 lbs and be daily driven, it is a hotrod so i need the power but i will be commuting in this deathtrap so i dont want to kill the mileage. would a denny t hurt mileage (I figure i can spool up the vgt turbo quickly and use the instant fuel) or should i go with an M&H middle of the road pin?

Remember for both questions (i think i might have snuck a few more in there) Im not pulling much weight and wont ever tow anything....what are your thoughts?

The compressed air from the turbo can reach 400+ degrees, so an intercooler will still help. To get good mileage, try not to make much boost while driving. Some starwheel setting, fuel pin, and injector combinations will make this easier/harder to do. If you are worried about mileage, buy decent quality injectors that aren't too big.

The DennyT Stage 2 helped my mileage loaded and unloaded by a small amount....so long as I stay out of the 'moke pedal.

The m2 or m3 will smoke less then the denny t pin neither will hurt your mpg. How are you controlling your turbo? If you can set it up to run little to no boost at cruise, mine was about 3lbs cruising at 60mph. That will keep the drive pressure down and the mpg up.
Have you thought about an air to water intercooler? Might be better for you.

For best results, find a way to have the intercooler in fresh air. You could do a water to air set up and have the cooler for that circuit under the car somewhere hidden.

Im gonna controll the turbo manually with a motorcycle type brake lever...i figure going down the freeway i can leave it fully open so DP will be low. Off the line I can close up the turbo and have quick boost and low smoke or leave it open and floor it for a cloud if need be.

Ill have to look into air to water coolers. Right now its mocked up with just a cross over pipe....i might just run it that way and see how egt's are before i make up my mind.

As far as fuel pins go im leaning towards the denny t if it wont kill the mpg's (assuming i can keep my foot out of it)

For you limited area i would look into a injection system to cool the air when needed.

And i wouldn't bother with a pin.
