Story goes that this truck found its way to the dealer for a knock. Dealer keeps this truck for 2weeks trying to find the noise. They replace an injector, pull and check the rest,do multiple test blah blah blah. Charges the owner 1200$ and doesn't fix it. He gets it here and 30mins later I pull the lower section of oil pan and find this.

I really think some dealers should test there "technicians" for common sense

Wow. Talk about getting bent over the barrel

I know at my shop, even though it is a government shop, it doesn't roll out the door unless it is completley fixed...

Really I think this guy got pissed off and left there. No way would that have ever happened here. But then again I'm a "personally responsible" shop owner too.

Really how could anybody miss the whole idea about "check and see what's in the pan",Especially when its so easy

The Maxipad is bad!

I had a loader I had to look at in one of our Ag stores, a Doosan with a Bosch common rail fuel system. The machine had a knock at idle after it was warm. It also made several distinct knocks when turning over before it started, from the rear of the engine. (gear train area) Those sthi spreader mechanics pulled the head off to see if the valves were hitting the pistons! They changed 1 injector and then were stumped. I went up, checked the fuel pressures with the laptop, which they don't have, and they were ok, then went thru a bunch of other stuff. The tech up there told me that they checked it with a temp gun and the #1 exhaust port was a lot colder than the others, so they replaced that injector. I did the same thing and found 1 that was 50* higher than the others. I think the injector is stuck open, so they were going to replace at least that one, maybe all of them.
The knock when turning over? It was the starter. I pulled it out and hit the key, and it made a knocking noise sitting on the frame. That's a 1st for me.
Pretty sad when the factory rep tells them to call and have me come out when they are the dealer too. This is the 2nd time this has happened, and a different branch too!

Late 80's on 300 6cyl ferds were that way to. Metal gears are too noisy and too dependable

For an Ag Mechanics project, I worked on a Farmall 856 diesel that had stripped about 1/3 of the cam gear teeth and bent 8 of 12 pushrods. I have no idea why it did that, but with a new cam gear and push rods, it now runs like a top. The crank, pump, and idler gear were fine, supprisingly. No bent valves either. The T/A even works! Those old International mills are well built I guess

The 70's Dodges had a plastic coating over the cam gear teeth, and the chain ran on that. I think that was a noise thing too. Sucks to pull the cover off and see 1/2 the teeth missing.

I've no idea,I bought a used 44,000 mile motor for 3800$ and loaded the old one in the back of the truck.
The way it sounded was like wrist pin noise. Piston slap like. The metal was pure brass so I'm assuming that the motor ate one of the wrist pin bushings.
