Hell, I can't even buy a thrashed to hell parts truck because people think 2wd D-250s are worth 3k because "they run", even though they might not MOVE.
Mark.
I think it's the flat bill-wearing, Monster-swigging, roll coal in every intersection type that drive up the prices. I see CL adds for 12vs that say the truck will "roll coal like crazy" or "smoke like a train" and I can tell a kid wrote it because of the atrocious grammar and spelling. They still want prices like you mention because they figure an engine is worth $1500, a rearend is worth $500, a core transmission is worth $100, four rims and tires are worth $400, and the junk body is worth $500 at the scrap yard. There you go, $3000 in parts alone. It doesn't sink in that just because they saw one sell for that price once doesn't mean that's market value. In reality, I bought an engine and the truck happened to be attached to it. I'm sure they exist, but I can't think of many super nice 1st gens owned by "collectors". I can think of tons of kids that think their Cummings Deezul is worth a fortune, regardless of how ragged out it is. Unfortunately, diesel is "in".
That being said, I don't miss hearing "Roll some coal, Mann!" said by the S-10 and 2wd Power Joke driving numbnuts in the high school parking lot
