piston lift pump came apart

Postby dunes450r » Thu Jan 10, 2013 2:49 pm

so i'm just getting around to rounding up parts to install a hvlp lift pump that i got used from a member on here. figured i'd open the pump up real quick before installing it just to make sure everything is good to go inside. and here is what i found:

i'm sure the seller had no idea it was like this since he had ran it with no issues before pulling it off in favor of something else. i've sent him a message to discuss options but i'm curious what everyone's opinion is on what can be done with pump. is it salvageable? what should i do?

what kind of lift pump screen or prefilter are ya guys running to keep junk out of your piston lp?

is this too simple?

Yea that'd work. I'd bet you could find one even cheaper at the local lawn mower shop.

I've seen guys use this too http://www.genosgarage.com/FLEETGUARD-U ... fo/FF5079/

anyone? appears the parts that got chewed up are the diaphragm/one way valve that lets fuel travel from the inlet side to the pressure side of the piston?

Over on Cummins Forum, there is currently a used low pressure piston lift pump kit for sale for $150.00

It's not one of my kits, so I don't know if it's a DAP kit or a Cummins lift pump. If that's a Cummins pump, that's a steal.

Is there issues w/ the dap pumps?

An issue? No, but they are not a whole lot better than a stock diaphragm style. They seem to push anywhere from 5-9 psi (sometimes a bit more), and aren't near the quality or move the fuel that the Cummins low pressure pump does.
There is a reason that you can buy the DAP pump, directly from Oregon Fuel Injection for $78.00

That inlet screen catches only the really big stuff, what I have used before is a in line strainer, Fleetguard FF5079. It will keep out the junk that gets pulled up from the tank. Without a capable strainer, the screen can plug, and/or the piston walls will get scored, hindering output...

i wish that was the problem, the diaphragm is trashed, as in it came apart and the previous owner kept running it without knowing, then sold it to me....

Just a related question, how often should one change that pre filter?
