It changes advance according to the weight of the flyweight, the tension of the spring(s) and the length of the slots the advance weights are limited to.
Changing the tension of the spring and the flyweight's density regulates the timing curve.
Manufactured properly, the springs could serve to help dampen the pump's mechanical action.
