VE Injection Pump Rebuild

I was discussing this in another thread but my injection pump died. It is no longer pumping high pressure. Does anyone on the board have any experiences rebuilding their own or has anyone done one. Mine will be more than a reseal?

Until you get it torn down, you won't really know what you need.
If you end up needing one, I do have a couple of Brand New BOSCH Head and Rotors that are the same specs as an Intercooled pump.

If I were set up with a nice clean place to do it, I'd re-seal and send you a good one
But that's a dream at the moment, along with rebuilding the multitude of turbos I have lying around here.

Have you ever rebuilt one? My biggest question is can it be done with simple hand tools and a few specialtie tools? From what the injection pump rebuilder has said it can't be done at all at home. But the transmission shops would tell you the same thing.

Another thing too is calibration. I have wondered if that is a given. This is one thing I hate about diesels. I don't like how the injectors and pump are some sort of mystery.

Absolutely it can be done with tools in the average man's toolbox and, of course, there is a tool or 2 you may have to make or buy.
A far as the injection pump shop telling you that a layman can't rebuild one, they are full of schit.

At this point, you have already proven yourself that you are well enough acquainted with the basics of these engines enough to undertake an injection pump rebuild and, as it stands now, the chances of you fixing it for less than a "shop" can are higher, plus the cost of trying and FAILING is the same as just buying another one from a "shop" or a rebuilder.
As I said to someone before, "My money's on gambling that I can fix it myself, if I can't, it costs me nothing to have tried and I still LEARN SOMETHING, even if I fail".

In reality, if you can take a 4 barrel carb apart and put it back together and have it run, you can do a VE injection pump.

In your case, with the pump "suddenly" not working, it may well be a plainly evident problem, once it's apart.
I wouldn't doubt that the plunger return springs failing are at least a part of the issue.

I rebuilt (took it completely apart to re seal it) and it wasn't that bad..... just be careful, a lot of people screw stuff up by not putting it back together properly. but it isn't something that nasa needs to do.

What all special tools did it require?

None..... you can use normal wrenches for the ones that are special....like the 3 sided ones. You need an s or something to get the pump off.

Seems like a lot more guys are doing it themselves than I would have ever imagined. It would not surprise me if there is a how-to on YouTube, I watched the dealer's film for changing out recall pumps there. Isn't the information age something crazy? And if you do have trouble fixing the pump, a rebuilt with a couple upgrades on Ebay is pretty cheap, in my case just a little over half of what a good shop quoted me to rebuild it if I carried it in..

You don't even need that, if you remove the pump combo for the lower one and use a certain combo of 1/4" drive stuff for the rear one.

Yep, that is true...when one takes off the vacuum/power steering pump combo you can get to the back side one.

I use a custom wrench I bent with a torch and cut off to reach the lower pump bolt.

I think I am going to attempt this. I was hoping to be driving my truck to a local car show on the 15th but I don't know if I will make it. Hopefully the problem will be pretty evident. From what I have read I should be ok with not having to get it recalibrated.

Here are some problems I am thinking my pump could have but I am ruling out.

1. The main rotor and pump vanes. I feel like these should rarely break but I could be wrong.
2. A broken keyway. I think if this had happened it would have stopped running immediately instead of act like it was running out of fuel.
3. I'm not really certain how the distributor head isolates the injector lines but I feel like I could be getting a problem here.

#2 is not unrealistic, though you should still have significant pressure from the injector lines, but you don't.
Have you pulled the filler tube and checked to see if the nut is tight and the gear moves when cranked?

You said you had a problem with the FSS plunger and the engine not shutting off, so that begs the question:
"If the FSS failed and wouldn't shut it of, that means it probably chipped or eroded the plunger's tip, so WHERE did the parts go?"

This last may well be the question with the answer.

I have had no problem with my FSS. I the key way was broken it might have the gear spinning on the shaft. Maybe it will be something that easy. I ordered the rebuild DVD thanks to Ellis. I saw where 5 other people ordered on the same day. I don't know if that is a coincidence but it seems like we should have gotten a 1stgen.org discount!
