1996 12 valve

Postby Remps » Sat Mar 16, 2013 8:01 pm

Soo, I am going to be doing a driveway handbomb headgasket change on the 96, noticed coolant in the oil a couple days ago. My first day off in 3 months, and now this. I want to use a 20 over cummins marine gasket, hoping that it will hold better than the std one. Will this gasket make it haze? It runs super clean right now, don't really want to ruin that. Could I run thinner injector washers to help get rid of potential haze with a thicker gasket? Thinking of getting studs instead of headbolts, how much torque can be put on the A1 headstuds? I just want the darn thing to not leak, its at an estimated 250 rwhp, maybe a little more, by the ole SOP meter. I don't plan on turning it up any, but I'd like to be able to use the fuel I have now.

My common sense says if you like it the way it is with the thickness gasket you have now then stay with it.

What is the general opinion on using copper spray on a cummins head gasket?

I don't use it on any thing. I clean the surfaces till they are spotless with 3M surface prep disc (like a scotchbrite pad on an angle die grinder) then wipe down with brake clean. Spotless, oil free.....always works

My dad used that stuff a long time ago.....copper coat,or something....used it mostly on steel shim gaskets on high comp gas motors

The guy I work with uses it when a surface isn't freshly decked. If it's just a gasket replacement he usually cleans it good with the cookies like Ellis said, then sprays the copper on. Haven't had one come back yet.

Well i dont know bout dem cookies pete, but i did get some 600 grit sandpaper. :) I also bought a torque wrench, a 2 ton crane, scraper, razor blades, spray gasket remover, brakecleen, and ordered a headgasket. I was bored yesterday so i backed all the valves off a little, torqued the head down to 120, reset the valves and changed the oil. So far no more coolant in the oil, not sure if its still losing antifreeze or not.

Trip to Harbor Freight?
We call them cookies at work because that's what they look like. Surface prep discs is the proper name I think.

Ah, I see. I am just going to use a sanding block on it. Lost antifreeze and gained oil again today, hopefully gasket is here tomorrow. I think I am going to try the copper spray.

Got the head ready to pull today, and got the engine hoist assembled. Took me 7 hours to take everything apart, probably spent over an hour looking for tools. This is not a job I want to do again on a 2nd gen, what a pita lol. The 1st gens look soo roomy under the hood in comparison. I am going to take the head to a machine shop to get checked and o ringed. I got a 20 over cummins gasket a couple days ago. I have a question... Everything I've read on removing the head does not mention putting the engine at tdc before pulling the head, so I didn't bother. When I went to back off the valves all the way, two of the valves still had a little spring tension on the rocker when backed off all the way. Is this going to be an issue when I put it back together?

A little, but not much. Just be careful when you assemble it and it should be ok. I never back mine off when I do it, I just yank the head and assemble the same way.

Ok, right on. Got the head off this morning, exhaust manifold bolts and headgasket came off really easy. Must have been apart not long ago.

Finally up and running today, runs good! Copper sprayed the gasket and reused stock bolts torqued to 125. Was cleaning the block last week and noticed # 6 cylinder was slightly scuffed, so I decided to hold off on machining the head and studding it till I can afford to do a complete rebuild. Gona do a third bolt torque check tomorrow morning and call it good for now.

Well I got about 800 kms out of it and found antifreeze in the oil again. Pulled the head off and got it checked out at a machine shop (shoulda done that in the first place) and it checks out fine. Had it cleaned, magnafluxed, and valves vacuum tested, head is perfectly flat. Another thing I shoulda done is check the oil cooler before putting the head back on. Oh well. Going to pull the cooler and pressure test it somehow. I might just leave it parked for a few months and save money for a cam, ported o ringed head and a rebuild kit. And use the head off the 96 on the 90, since the headgasket is blown on it, and that head is more than likely cracked and warped. I'd like to get it o ringed as well. For now the diesels are parked. :/

I feel like a complete dumbass now. Turns out it was the oil cooler, so I pulled the head twice for nothing. Made it back to the farm and put the head back on a couple weeks ago with a std. thickness felpro head gasket, holding fine so far.

Back to driving the rav4 for the winter. The diesel here is around 50c more a gallon, and 20 minute morning warmups for a two mile drive to work is just silly and expensive. Still not sure whether I want to rebuild this motor or put a ve motor in it. If I put a n/ic ve I want to use the vaccum/ps pump off the 96 engine on the ve. Will those parts bolt on or would i have to make modifications to the timing case? If mods are required I am thinking rebuilding the pee pump motor would be easier. Thoughts and opinions?
