Postby TRACTJDS0428 » Fri Apr 19, 2013 5:55 pm

Getting ready to build my traction bar set up for my truck. Looking at the rear axle, im gonna need longer U bolts. Does anybody know what size come on the truck off the top of their head or what size u bolts everybody is using for traction bars on the 1st gens? Do i need to box the frame where i mount the front?

When I did mine, we just welded the brackets to the rear end. Just another option for you

Did you weld them to the axle tube or to the u-bolt bracket?

Weld tabs to the axle tube for those bars, it might last a little while but pulltilbroke can show you what happens when the axle rotates in the plates. BANG!

They're 1/2" fine thread, can't think of the exact thread TPI, 28 I think.

Just whip out a tape measure and get the length of the legs and whether it's a round bend or a squared off bend. It's squared off I think, on a 2.5" wide leaf. Any spring shop can whip them up for you in no time, I think mine ran me like $30 for all four.

Also make sure you have them put enough thread on the legs.

Ok so i have a place down the road that can get me the u-bolts. but what are the pros and cons to welding to the axle housing? I know that the axle can rotate under the right circumstances but what kind of problems could i have welding directly to the axle? I am a welder so i know i have to be careful not to damage bearings. Im thinking geometry could be a little more difficult. Does anyone have pictures of their setup? or can someone point me in the direction of pictures?
