Yes, could have been old stock on the shelf though.

Ike, pull the head, have it surfaced. Hopefully the bolt will come out pretty easy with the head off. Tap the holes with the regular tap, then the bottom tap. Wait! If you are putting regular bolts back in, why bottom tap? Just run the regular tap thru and put it together!

Here is the deal I am faced with. The head is a 9mm, and I am sure it is cracked, like most are. Would it still be worth it to have it surfaced? I wanted to buy a new one, but I can't swing it...I was just gonna run a super fine scotch brite pad over it and clean it up a bit...

I'd just run it till I could do better, after all it's not really a bad job. Like you said,it's more than likely cracked,it would be a 1out of 100 chance it wasn't from all I've read.

That's what I think I am gonna do. Unfortunately, I got a sick child, so this heap is going to have to get put on the back burner for a bit...

Just cut the majority of the taper off the bottom of a normal tap, that's how I always make mine. Just use a cutoff wheel and keep dunking it in water as you go. If you turn the metal blue it'll be worthless as a tap since it'll be annealed.

Well, all the parts are ordered and on the way, hopefully everything will be in by mid-week next week and I can start assembly. I will probably start tearing into it tomorrow morning and see how far I get. I still have a laundry list of things to get done on the truck anyways, so while I am waiting on parts, I can finish up that stuff...
