Rubber Fuel Line Replacement

Postby Diesel » Thu Sep 26, 2013 7:19 pm

Hey guys, I think my rubber lines need to be replaced. For the first time in the many years I've had my truck I can smell a little raw diesel around the truck. Lift pump is new and not leaking and its not leaking from the fuel filter area. Pretty sure its got original rubber lines. So heres the questions: 1. the tank has to be dropped so do I replace the straps too? 2. What size rubber line are we talking about? I want to find all Made in USA hose and clamps so I'll search around.

I wouldn't worry about straps unless they are rusted badly.

Factory comes with plastic lines. So if you have rubber they've already been replaced.

I'd run 3/8" supply and a 5/16" return.

Not exactly sure what I have - I should have specified that.

So factory is hard plastic line with soft elbows? If that's still there do I just replace the elbows with new soft line or is everyone running all new line from tank to lift pump?

Is 3/8" supply factory or a little bigger?

Factory is 5/16 the 3/8 is a bit of an upgrade. Just installed 3/8 on my pile.

Cool. So you ran all rubber line and have no plastic line now? How many feet of the hose will I need for each size?

Just off the cuff estimating 6 feet of each hose should be plenty right?

Make sure you buy diesel rated hose.

Well i am nowhere near my 1st gens to take a measurement, but if you measure from the gas cap to the front of the truck it should be more than enough line. Or crawl underneath and run a string from the top of the tank up to the lp or ip if you want a more accurate measurement.

I just noticed you are dropping the tank, if it were mine I would get an aftermarket drawstraw as well. Or at least pull the factory one and inspect and clean it. Isnt there a screen on the factory one that can get dirty?

Yes there is a screen and anything thicker than diesel can clog it.

IMO the best mod is to do what BC847 did............pull the factory sending unit and replace the factory draw straw with a larger hose.

I like the idea of upgrading all the way up. I'll see if I can find the bc847 mod.

I used 3\8 hyd. line and I cut off 20' and it was more than enough almost double if I remember right. when I redo it I'll be going 1\2 supply and 3\8 return I think.
