how many here run a mech oil psi gauge

Postby ellis93 » Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:50 am

I broke the OEM sender and replaced it with a Borg-warner unit from O'Reilly. Before with the old unit the gauge read half way,hot.....and 3/4,hot,running down the road. Now with the new one installed I'm seeing 1/4 hot and 1/2 running down the road.
This had me curious this morning so I screwed in a test gauge.....hot,idling....grand total of 35lbs and 60 rev'd up.

What I want to know is what's the pressures you all are seeing?

Me too.....

I see 65-80 cold idle, 30-45 hot idle, and 55 going down the road.

Good it's normal then.....I've just never seen it that low....ever :)

What's the chances of one getting it up some by dickin with the regulator?

It's plenty high enough for everything to get proper oil, I wouldn't mess with the regulator. (didn't know there was one)

I gained 10 psi of hot idle psi....when I changed my turbo. The new turbo, being tighter and therefore more restrictive gained me that much in oil pressure.

Yep there's always a regulator in any oiling system, ours is in the oil filter housing.....as far as I'm seeing on the net. I've not looked into it hard yet.

Makes perfect sense on the turbo increasing oil psi. That's a pretty good bleed if those bushings aren't tight. Essentially it would be an open hole to puke psi thru.
I don't think I've problems there tho,everything still is tight,idk

My old turbo was still "normal" on shaft play, no in/out....didn't leak a drop.

But again, I don't see your oil psi being a problem. My 01 and 03 that I used to own both well under a 100k miles....they'd run 40 psi warm oil pressure and 50 running down the highway...hot idle would be 25.

I'll probably let it be......it just bugs me

I need to focus on injection pump anyhow.

I checked it out in the original service manual and it states that the gauge should be 1/4 of the way at idle and at about 1/2 when under load. Just so you know
