Good Lock Ring and or Snap Ring Pliers

Postby bgilbert » Mon Feb 24, 2014 6:55 am

Looking for recommendations on a couple pairs or set of Lock Ring and or Snap Ring Pliers. I've heard there are ratcheting units, and ones that will lock in place?? The ones I have work great for the Getrag and ok for the heavy SOB's in the NP205. I'd really like to focus on Lock Ring Pliers as I deal with more lock rings (no eye or hole) than snap rings. Thanks in advance.

Find a snapon truck, ask about the black set. Absolutely the best investment I've made regarding snaprings. They're not fancy but functional, they don't really have a bad price either. There are 4 pair of them to do internal and 4 to do external. One pair does the snapring like in the dodge auto od unit. It'll open up to like 2" from down to a 1/4,very handy. They also have a Nice set that has that comfort grip stuff on the handles,I thought they'd have been slick when oiled up but their not. Saves your hands some.

Anything with Matco on it is hateful on the price! Snap On and Mac are usually comparable, and Matco is usually higher in price, around here anyways.

I haven't liked the tools from matco,I had a box from them that I liked but that was it.

I've come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as "good" snap ring pliers. Because there's no such thing as "good" snap rings. By the time you get that much tension on that little of a nub, there's no way it doesn't break with regularity. I've broken many a Snap-On snap ring plier, and the replacements at some point stopped fitting in the box. I used to have a Klein kit that was completely demolished in short order, and my Blue Point modular kit disintegrated.

Snap rings suck.
