Heat soak? The el-cheapo Chinese piece of crap starter I got from Nixon does the same thing after cranking on it for a little bit, let it cool for ten-fifteen minutes and its good for another 30 seconds

When the electric motor itself (the windings) wear out... they don't conduct electricity as well when hot. Meaning the starter won't work when driving around after a while. It'll usually seem like you have a dead battery..... let it sit for a while and it'll work normal again.
