My 04 BEW TDi doesn't reach 190 degrees during the colder months, I'd be lucky if it hit 40 mpg. In the brutal cold of January, it got a whopping 34 mpg. The temp would drop off to 140ish while driving through town, and it wod come up to 170ish on the highway. Now it will get up to 190 and its getting 45-48mpg. These little mills don't generate much heat to begin with :?

Yeh, I wondered if that wouldn't be an issue when we started the swap.

More mpg results!

I got two more tanks through since the tire/turbo changes and got 39 on a 600 mile tank and 40.5 on the last tank of 650 miles. 8) About midway through the last tank I put a ball valve in and shut off the rear heater core. It warms up a bit faster now, but still takes 7-8 miles. I'm thinking about blocking part of the radiator again. Last summer and winter I blocked the entire radiator off and it never overheated except once at about 95 degrees ambient temp. (flip on the rear heat and it cooled off in about 60 seconds  )

At the rate we're putting on miles, i'll be saving about $2,000 a year in fuel. :D

FYI - at 40 mpg this van has a theoretical range of over 1,000 miles :D

Time for a new turbo - the old one stuck again and this time it stuck nearly closed and isn't drive-able at all. A good used turbo found me (friend offered to sell one) thank G-d. A new one would run about a $1000 by the time its all done. I'll put it in this week sometime.

Turbo update: I finished putting in the new (used) one tonight at 10 pm and took it for a short test run to check for oil leaks etc and WOW! It confirmed what I suspected that the old turbo hadn't been quite right for years. The engine is responsive like it hasn't been since maybe when I first bought the car in 08' 150,000 miles ago. I can't wait to see what happens to my mpg!

That does sound like some great mileage. I'm going to have to go back to my 480, so I can get my mileage back. Though I'll still only be at half what you're getting

Did a slug of maintenance and fixing on the van today. I pushed it in Dad's shed and turned on a couple propane heaters. It grenaded a cv joint yesterday so I figured while in the shop I should do some other stuff too. I changed a stuck rear brake cylinder, changed the oil and filter, replaced a couple leaking seals on the oil cooler and installed a coolant heater - the type you stick in a radiator hose. These TDI's don't have freeze plugs so no block heaters. :( I can't wait to see how it works. 600 watts ought to warm it up. :)

27,000 miles on the swap already. Winter mileage is in the low to mid 30's this winter. Just a hair better than last winter, but at least I have some heat now. Disconnecting the rear heater core made a huge difference in winter warm up times. And last winter, anything below about 15 degrees and the van would not come up to operating temps. Now I can hit operating temps at about 5 degrees AND have some heat to boot. :D
