I have a 4bt pump to play with. I pulled the head off it, saw the springs and such, and put it back on. I'll play with it later when mine starts to act up.

Alright guys....those that have torn them apart. What is the piece in side the pump that's assembled backwards and leads to a not start condition?
I've seen it mentioned a few times but can't remember.

2 things:

180 out on the cam plate. The little nub that orientates the rotor should be inline with the key.

Shutdown lever wasn't installed correctly.

Ok I'll look at the lever and remember the nub thing.

I've now pulled down the non intercooled pump and found a rusty mess in the vane pump :puker: looks like I'll use at least one part from the junk pump.

What do you guys do about holding the head and rotor assembly together when you reassemble the pump? Do I need some grease to hold it? I'm sure that all goes back before the govenor lever and what not does.....?

Vaseline or grease works well to hold things in place. You'll need to install the head fulcrum lever prior to putting the head back on, because there are 2 springs that push on the fulcrum lever from the head assembly.

Yeah I seen them when disassembling the pump. All that loose stuff looks like it's gonna be a real pita to get back together too.

Nice explanation with the pics, thanks Ellis!

When I had my shaft out of the pump top, I drove the balls out, then threaded the holes and put set screws back in with some Loctite or sealer or something on them. I can't remember what I used. Next time I won't have to be driving on the pump top, just grab an allen wrench and pull the screws.
