So I rebuilt my cousins transmission in his 99 4wd 2-2.5 years ago everything has been fine and my cousin serviced about 3 months ago and everything looked great. My cousin let a "good friend" borrow his truck and to work on the steering and do an alignment since this "good friend" had an alignment shop.

Well this guy had it 2 months and did no work to it and when he brought it back he ruined 2 tires, gashes in the side walls.....and then when he was leaving he said oh by the way its shifting funny. This is what my cousin found when he dropped the pan.

I'm having a hard time seeing it, but I'm guessing there's a lot of metal shavings in there. I'm also guessing it's due to abuse which your cousin didn't cause.

I may abuse the trans on my truck, but that's because it's mine.

That's what got me into this, was the mechanics of it. Unfortunately there's no performance diesel shop around here, but before I was into diesels, used to be into race cars, dirt track, mud trucks, high hp gas stuff. Used to spend the weekends in a shop down the road from my parents, old guy, used to teach auto shop at local school. During his free time, he built and crew chiefed the Ameristep dirt track car. Guys a wizard, smart as hell, and was willing to teach as much as you wanted to absorb. Wasn't just cars either, if it was mechanical he tinkered with it.

Got nothing against guys who can sling that software around and make a truck do as they want, especially since I haven't a clue how it works, but performance still boils down to the mechanics of it, and I think that's being lost

I thought they were having good luck with them as boat anchors.

I agree it should take more than just slapping some parts on something to be labelled a performance shop. It's one reason why I want to keep the surfacer, boring bar, and other some of the other machining equipment my dad has. I also want a mill, and a lathe as it'll make building things I want easier

I just finished reading American Sniper. It's an excellent read if you have the time. I read the whole thing in 30 hours elapsed time. It's hard to put down.

You guys need to get your heads out from under the rocks.

Tuning makes or breaks you. Mechanical parts have a limit but electronics go a whole nuttha level. It's still mechanical with electricity telling it when to open. You can now fine tune those part even more fine. Just got to think of it differently.

Well, I finally bought Dallas a new vehicle. I test drove a lot of different cars, almost bought her a few Subarus and Hondas but ultimately decided on this...

Parker, we have had 3 at this house, my wife has had 2...an 89 we sold with 189k and a 2001 60th anniversary we bought new, traded it with only 39k for my first diesel, a 97 CC dually 5 spd, they were both pretty good, the 89 I dropped the pan and put new rod bearings and oil pump at 169k from low pressure, the 2001 was still pretty much new.

my boy had a 99 we put a new 4.0 in and he commenced destroying on many drunken mudding trips, so that don't really count.

we liked the 2001 but when I got the wife to agree to drive a dually 5spd as a grocery getter I was like YEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAA and I traded the next day before she could change her mind.

the only real problem with a 4.0 is head gasket issues and they are pretty easy to work on.

But those don't pop till someone either doesn't pay attention to the guage or the chicken schit plastic radiator splits a tank.
Maintenance is key.
IMHO they are better than the grand Cherokee, lighter and get better mileage (from what I'm told).
