No worries. I'd never considered they'd be tapered. I also thought it was longer by 1.5 inches

Mud tires are the biggest waste of money automotive accessory I've yet come upon. They're expensive, they throw rocks, they wear fast, they make noise, and just forget about snow. I'm looking at BFG ATs and cheap-o Mastercraft ATs now.

I never believed siping made that much of a difference in snow, but it is a night and day difference. I hate to admit it, but I love the look of a big mud tire and they are useless for anything but mud.

They sure are. Or really deep snow.

Problem is, you can't get large tires in anything but.... so I'm stuck with mud tires

The more sniping in a tire the better they are in the snow and ice. I love the BFG At on the snow. I ran them on my 2wd Duramax and that thing went everywhere in the snow with some weight in the bed.

Interco iroks are apparently quite good though. Know of a guy who siped and studded a set on his 5500, and he could go anywhere

Yeah, hard to believe some fine cuts in the edge of a tire do anything, but it's a night and day difference in traction. I had some Cooper Discoverers I got used, and ran them for a winter. They were fair, not great, but good enough to get back and forth to work and around. They were pretty wore out and I regrooved them and added some sipes to get another year out of them because I didn't have any money for new tires. They were better the 2nd year than they were the 1st one.

Compound makes a big difference too. I had a set of Bridgestone blizzaks that were great. Non studded, but a great winter tire. Bastards discontinued that model when I needed new ones, so I went with some cheaper winter tires. Studded, lots of siping, but boy do they ever suck. Even with 600 pounds in the bed they had almost no traction on anything, but dry pavement

It's not like we get insane amounts of snow, but I hate accelerating at a snail's pace if there's so much as a dusting of snow for fear of running into the ditch.

Trust me I know.... mud tires SUCK in every condition other than dry pavement (IF THEY ARE A QUALITY MUD TIRE - TOYO M/T) or in actual mud... they do ok in deep snow (6"+)

Siping is the cat's meow for anything.

One advantage...I have been driving mud tires for so long in the "snow belt" that I can literally drive on racing slicks and have yet to this day put anything in the ditch or have an accident. I have been trained to pay the flip attention and SLOW DOWN. I take it as an advantage now.

I had to learn the hard way. 2 accidents with studded winter tires due to sliding.

So since Uncle Sam decided I get some of my money back this year I started looking for a donor truck for the crew cab. I found a cheap 99 Dodge 2500 5 speed 4x4 I'm going to go look at. The body is shot and its been a plow truck all its life. It has 167xxx miles and either has something broke in the transmission or T-case they said. If I get it the Duck will get my 47rh and the axles out of the 99.
