A 12 valve ve, in stock form (cam, compression, etc....) is TERRIBLE at spooling a turbo. I'd run a spool valve/diverter valve on anything larger than a 68 turbine wheel and T3 housing.

Mine didn't do terrible with the old 80/74 14cm turbine side on my 62. If the hype of the new 80/74 wheel is real it'll be nothing to run a 64 like mine did with the 62.

I'm also still not totally sold on spool valves. Seems a lot of people have had them leak, and end up acting like a open volute housing. Again though it's all a persons perspective on lag, and how much they're willing to live with. You know what lag I've dealt with for the past year and a half

Thats the thing with all the spool valves I've seen, you lose the seal between the front and rear cylinders before the exhaust gets to the turbine wheel, open or closed. I think building one into the outlet of an exhaust manifold would keep the cylinders divided in the unactivated position, then the divider itself could pivot on a one sided hinge on a 45 degree angle blocking the rear volute and diverting all exhaust to the front volute. I'd pay 700-800 for a stainless manifold with a properly engineered valve built in. Gotta be a way to build one that doesn't have any exhaust leaks.

What about aftermarket cams? BC how did yours spool before your cam swap?

Fatty what about you?

So advancing time reduces heat/expansion going into the turbine side. Would having more low end fuel than before the added timing (a "blacker" cloud to spool) help any?

I guess with advance, low end fueling could get to the point of spiking cyl pressures BEFORE tdc, and in turn slow spool and reduce bottom end grunt further?

More smoke will always result in slower spoolup. It's the heat that spools chargers, and soot makes the exhaust heavier slowing the action on the turbine wheel

No problem. I have enough experience with my monster singles on my 6.7 to know just how much a lot of smoke hurts spoolup.

So whats the best shade of plume to spool the fastest? A light cloud you can still see through?

Light haze at the darkest. The 476 I have on my 6.7 has a habit of surging around 1900 if I manage to run smoke free under heavy throttle, but it does light up faster when run smoke free

Makes sense. When people say too much "puts out the fire", are they meaning the combustion process is actually hampered, or are they referring to the slower spool?

Anyone who'd like to answer, what are and what affected your max boost #s.

I'm not talking about altering boost by fueling mods, unless it is timing related. I mean what has been done that ultimately decreased boost, yet did not decrease air volume.

In a nutshell: timing, porting (turbo/manifolds/head), cam, intake plumbing, intercooler etc. and anything else
