Keeping IP alive w/stock lift pump

Postby spencerdiesel » Mon Nov 02, 2015 4:12 pm

Hey everyone, only mods are fuel pin and 366 spring. How much fuel is "ok" to run over stock, before diaghram pump can't keep enough fuel to the IP for longevity? I'll be getting 12 psi piston pump, but it'll be a little while. Can I turn my fuel screw in just a little?

Get a fuel pressure gauge on it and see then. It's not hard to pull the stock lift pump down to 0psi with just pump mods (in my experience).

I know I should get a gauge, but not feasible for the time being.

Truck doesn't "fall on its face", but piddles out noticeably at 2800 rpm.
I know VE's aren't high revvers, but is that a bit early? I promise eventually ill get a piston pump

Sounds like you are out of fuel. Get a gauge on there. Cheaper than a injection pump.

Geno's garage has the banjo bolt tapped for 1/8th pipe for $7 or $8, and any pressure gauge will work to see what is going on. And old oil pressure gauge, boost gauge (I've seen them used), as long as you can read the pressure it will work for a temporary trouble shooting tool.

I have a $15.00 summit mechanical fuel psi gauge on my truck along with the banjo bolt Pete spoke of, works fine

Great info, I like saving greenbacks. Ordered the piston pump from THD, 12 psi spring. Put 7'' fs1221 filter on. Just the bigger filter actually took 3 tenths off the 30-60 time. Previous wasn't clogged either, cut it open and just found a couple specs. Could the extra surface area aid in flow just like on an air filter?

Looking at the isspro R5604R mechanical gauge. I've ordered the banjo bolt, should I have bought the one that came with a snubber instead? Will the needle bounce?

What tubing is the best/safest to run since fuel will be going into the cab?

Well, some get away with running the fuel line into the cab, but I have an isolator on my mess. Uses antifreeze/coolant on the other side. Has worked flawlessly for many years. It's easier to get the banjo with the "snubber" built in, or get a needle valve from a hardware store and add it after the banjo. If you run the line off the regular banjo directly to the gauge, you're wasting money as you'll kill the gauge with the pulsating pressure.

I'd love to plumb an isolator but every one I've looked at is astronomically pricy....so the guage would live if I installed a needle valve after the banjo?

I literally run the boost gauge kit, and hook it up like an oil pressure gauge.

I have zero needle bounce by leaving air in the lines. Simple and affordable. Never had a failure.
