Snapon or?

Postby spencerdiesel » Fri Nov 06, 2015 4:47 pm

Hey ya'll, while I'm in school I've got a 52% discount on the big three. I bought a Snapon 3/8 TQ wrench (as tool of the week) for $118, when list price is $305. It's tempting to by everything I see, but I know the wise choice is to not make all my tools Snapon. I don't intend to turn wrenches for a living (I'm with the roofing crowd and like it), so it wouldn't make sense to drop mucho $ on uber tools. If ya'll were in the position, would you spend $ while you have the opportunity, or would you just roll to the Kobalt/Husky side? I have some Kobalt tools and They're not half bad.....

If I had a 52% off coupon I'd buy damn near every tool I think I'd ever need.......probably all snapon as well. At 52% your paying craftsman prices for top knotch tools.

I'd at least buy my sockets and end wrenches from them......and their ratchets. Snapon has the best ratchets imho.

Thanks Ellis! Yea and tool of the week normally discounts another 9% or so......I intend to make all my ratchets (holy cow my 3/8 80T locking flex ratchet makes me feel a little TOO good) snapon, I'll probly get a 50 - 250 1/2" TQ wrench, and maybe some ball hex's......brain's turnin 3k rpm now.....

Buy all the tools that you may need that are specialized. All the socket drive allen, torx and those type of tools. Any lesser quality brand you will be buying them again and again. Wrenches, sockets and ratchets are just as good in craftsman, and I have many harbor freight wrenches and sockets that have been used hard with no problems. Buying with 50% off is great, I wish I had the opportunity to do that. Air tools are real good too, but they don't have a lifetime warranty like hand tools. I have a MG3100 3/8 air wrench that will out torque my IR 1/2 drive gun.

Roofing is ok, but when you get older you will be looking for something else when your back, knees and legs hurt.

I'd have to split ways with Pete on ratchets......craftsman suck, period. Their pro line isn't too bad but a few dollars more will buy a ratchet you could hand down.

Air tools didn't even cross my mind.....because I don't buy them from the tool trucks, normally. Sure I bought a few,but they are weird stuff like the huge die grinders they have. Those are awesome. For air tool I buy ingersol rand (sp). You can't beat the titanium line 1/2 impacts. I did buy a repo 3/8ths snapon air ratchet.....the 400$ black/chrome one.....60$ :)

Oh and don't discount the blue point stuff.....some of those sets are really handy. I have a blue point 1/4 set that comes in a carry case. That thing is really good for throwing in the truck when you have to go somewhere and do something. I had it a few months before buying the 3/8ths set.

But honestly don't let me pump you up on the all snapon crap. You can buy other stuff like impact swivels,deep/shallow sockets from anywhere. I have some harbor freight impact sockets at the house that I use and that's been pretty good stuff so far. I have some craftsman and matco deep and shallow sets, and snapon swivel socket sets at the shop.....I break the swivel sockets real regular......I use them a lot.

Food for more thought

I wish I would have bought more when I was in school. I had the same discount.

I did buy a few snappy ratchets and the MG725.

Now that I'm an equipment mech, it's even tougher to buy tools off the truck, prices are insane. I try to get used stuff when I can.

Snap on ratchets kick a$$ IMO. The air tools are some of the best I've used.

Yea I wasted a lot of money on the tool truck in the past. Now unless it is something I need RIGHT now, I just snag stuff from ebay. The more common stuff you can usually find half price.

I've decided just to pick here and there and use my "entertainment budget" for my snapon stuff.

So far got 3/8" and 1/4" locking flex head ratchets, angled & straight snap ring pliars and the TQ wrench.

I probably will leave most of my sockets Kobalt, just because theres a lowes every square mile here.

The Mac 1/4" air ratchet is pretty useful for small bolts. Break stubborn ones loose with a wrench or ratchet and zip them off with the air ratchet. It fits in tight places, especially useful when you can only get a few degrees of swing out of a ratchet.

I didn't want things to go this way, but higher end tools aren't lending any sort of hand in my financial state right now  Theres a one time 50% situation if I get a craftsman set. If I got a set I'd probably get the 500 piece.

Only thing being, how bad are the majority of modern CM tools these days (and I don't think the $300 500 piece set is pro) ? I havent heard a great rap, and some think that Kobalt is a better choice.

I do like Kobalt, and there's now a 430 piece set......but it's $400. And I don't know how soon/if it will go on sale......

My craftsman set is about 15 years old now. I don't know if that counts as modern, but I've only broken one socket so far.
