Rocky Mountain parts pro.
I'm currently building a 85 D150 canyon burner and replacing the slant 6 and torqueflite with a 318 from a 95 ZJ and a NV3500 5 speed, pedal cluster, master cylinder and booster from a 99 Ram 2500 2WD. should be pretty quick with solid towing power. couple more weeks and it should be back on the road.

318 with solid towing power. Sorry towing power and 318 do not go into the same sentence. That is some major conflict of terms there.

Remember this is a diesel site. We know about towing power.

Come on Philip, 318's made good power. That's all I pulled with before I bought a diesel. my 92 318 Dakota pulled my cummins D250 reg cab long bed. Pulled it great, couldn't stop. lol.

In the Dodge line up. I have towed with 318/340/360/400's. I'll take a big block hands down. Same for Chevy's. I have towed with all engines they made from 60 onward. Another big block call there.

Fords I don't go there. I wouldn't tow with anything diesel they have. If I was held at gun point to tow with a ford. I would want a good condition FE engine. 390 or mid rise 427/428. 460's were low compression after 71. A good 390 could out pull them on hills.

I've towed with a 318\360\3.9 v6 and 440. I can't afford the gas in a 440. I don't think I've ever driven a Ford that could pull anything.

If you want to talk Dodge gasser towing. The first thing I always did to any Dodge engine. Remove the stock intake and carb. Throw into closest scrap pile. Install after market intake and carb. I used Holleys myself. Then dial the carb in to the engine. Don't leave the Holley box stock. They need setup to the engine for jetting and power valve opening rate. Stock Holleys opened the power valves to soon for most stock engines. If you had deep rear end gearing like trucks used. It killed fuel milage.

What about the leaning tower of power????? :D My dad had a 1968 1 ton dump he hauled wood on. His trips were 3.5 cords of green oak to the paper mills. Been up plenty of hills in granny low just barely turning over. That was back when you could get away with that.
