No more porcrastinating

Postby cougar » Sat Oct 01, 2016 8:43 am

The 518 went yesterday without warning. So the 47RH swap has to begin. Got everything except how much to shorten the forward section of my rear drive shaft.

Some people don't shorten theirs but since the adaptor plate is 1 inch longer it should be shortened 1 inch. The case is the same

My center support bracket as well as the transmission mount plate is already at the end of their adjustment slots, so shortening the forward shaft is a have to. Really don't want to guess on this one. I'd l to get the center support bearing back in the middle or all the way forward in the slots.

Slide the shaft into the trans. Set the slide yoke about 2/3's of the way in. Hold the shaft up to the carrier bearing support. Measure the difference from bearing bracket to mount.

Well, the shop has the transmission all hooked up except the drive lines. They are getting my short shaft shortened. In the mean time I have modified my OD switch circuit to accommodate the CompShift's different wiring. All I had to do is change the relay on the board and the external wiring a little.

The transmission is defective. Just my luck. The overhauler won't warranty it. Just my luck.

It won't shift. All I have is 1st and reverse. May be valve body, may be governor. I have a neighbor that is going to look at it for me.

The transmission was torn down Thursday. The governor bore was badly pitted letting a lot of fluid to leak past the seals. Easy fix though, there is a repair sleeve for it. There was also a snap ring missing that wasn't helping. Otherwise thing looked good. While he has it apart I'm going to have him upgrade the usual problematic parts and install the shift kit.

It got worse. After repairing the governor he started on the throttle body that I wanted upgraded. Problems with the throttle body. Then he noticed other problems and took the transmission completely apart. At this point I would have been better off having him overhaul my $300 core instead of buying that $1,650 off the shelf unit. It literally looks like it was put together with discarded hard parts and new soft parts, all of which I will now have to replace. All totaled, I'll have about $6G in just the transmission not including the R&R and all the conversion fab work.

I think you should "Revisit" the warranty thing with the builder. Be sure to include pics.

I have filed complaints, but the business is up for sale. So I placed "comments" on his adds warning prospective buyers what liabilities they could face.
