got a call from Georend a while ago and the converter is on it's way, I was hopping to have the trans done and all the other stuff and just wating on it.....but that is not going to happen.

sooooo...Cow, did you get a DVD or book to help you out, or did you just jump off and free fall through the hole thing.

Do you have a book Dar?? I have one I can dig out and a bunch of other specs I can copy off and send off. I'd just need the book back if you needed it.

No I researched on-line....some good threads, and a few useful youtube vids, out there on rebuilding these 727/518 type trannies. Also a factory service manual has a pretty good step by step as well. That was all I used.....plus a thousand pics of it coming apart....every plate, shim, clip etc.

This actually saved my hide....I installed one of the planetaries upside down and when I got it all back together the tranny would not spin when turning the input shaft. Was looking trough the pics and I noticed a pic that did not match what I had recently done....so apart it came again and sure enough found the problem and corrected it.

Thashingcows,.....I have watched a few vids and took pics as well, I have an exploded breakdown printed, one thing i didn't do was soak the clutches in fluid, , I am going to set the OD unit in a bucket of fluid and take apart what I have done on the trans and soak the rest of the clutches tonight, hopfully I can get it together tomorow, I am taking off work to make some progress, maybe by middle of the week i can have it going down the road.

I think if it were me I'd pull the OD apart and soak the clutches. I would rather know they are completely soaked than to have the possibility of a failure on one of the weakest part of the transmissions. I'm just not sure well it would seep into the clutches, should be fine but there is always that chance. Especially the direct drive clutches as they are under pressure.

I have to agree....the spring pressure on the OD is going to cause the clutches and plates to be pretty well sealed up. Doubt more then the outer edges of the clutches will have any fluid on/in them. And the clutches in the main drive assembly too will not have much fluid either.

Sucks having to tear apart stuff you already assembled... ..but I'd rather take an extra day or so to tear it down and redo it now, then have the tranny grenade, or cook during my first drive.

well I took the OD apart and soaked the clutches as well as the trans and band, got it together and tomorrow I will get some wires re-taped and some cleaning done as well as new rubbers in the rear trans mount, gota pick up the fluid as well.


one funny thing, after I got the apply pistons together I thought it looked wrong so I went in and watched some vids......holy crap I must have went mental for a second....there was not 1 piece of them that wasn't upside down or backwards, looked good after they were done right.

You have to be care full on FSM views also. I know for a fact the 78 FSM has a wrong pic of the forward clutch apply piston. It shows installing the piston backwards.

I had to trouble shoot a trans with a fresh rebuild that was slipping in all forward gears. I found a 76 FSM showed the correct pic.

OK ....problem, trans is together and full of fluid, ran the truck for 30 min in park and neutral, it won't move in any gear, but when I pull off a trans cooler line it pumps loads of fluid out, so to me that rules out the converter not being seated in the pump, and as I was bolting up the converter to the flex plate I could rotate the converter easily with my finger tips after I had the bell housing pulled up tight.

#1 remember I put a transgo kit in the valve body.....My gut is the valve body is not right and not putting the pressure where it needs to go.

#2 can someone that has a FSM tell me where to check pressures and what port to check, I think I can narrow it down if I know this.

If you guys think I am on the right track with the valve body, would anyone have one laying around I could stick in to see if that is it, if so I can buy one.

OK hold on, I just went over and read Dave's build thread on another forum, he said it took 20 qts to fill his trans with a deep pan, I also have a deep pan but only have 13 qts in it, maybe I should check that again in the morning, when I can see good.

I bet its low, you probably remember but just to make sure, check it in neutral. The ports are sorta self explanatory. Port on the DS is the OD port, the one directly across on the pass side sticking out the side is the Gov port. The one below and sticking out behind is the rear servo, middle is the accumulator port, and the front one is the front servo. I have the test procedure I will try and upload or I can email it to you.

thanks man, they are only self explanatory if you know what you are looking at..

I am going to pick up more fluid today and double check that, and I will rig up a psi gauge to check some pressures as soon as I can.

grandkids are spending the weekend with us so everything is on hold....they come first.

Well if your 7 quarts low you will probably have a "no go" situation.... Heck I had a tranny that was only 2-3 quarts low and would barely move.

Hope that's your problem. BTW I thought I had a bad valve body in a 727 a couple years ago and was talking to a friend of mine who is friends with a long time mopar tranny guy. He asked this fellow about my issue and mentioned that I thought it might be a bad VB. Well this old times told my friend that in 30 years of rebuilding 727's and their cousins, that he has replaced exactly "Zero" valve bodies. He says they just do not wear out, and seldom if ever have any issues with them.

It's back in the truck, but not all buttoned up, got sick yesterday and couldn't finnish, found a spring missing and a stuck valve in the VB, and an extra clutch in the OD unit, everything eles was OK, maybe a test drive report in a day or so, this time I am cleaning and painting everything along with new rear trans mount rubbers.
