Manual overdrive switch, what happens if left on?

Postby adcotton » Mon Dec 26, 2016 8:42 am

hoping to find out what will happen if the OD solenoid was left activated when slowing or
Coming to a stop. Is it like a high range and it will go through the gears normally but at a higher ratio, or will it try to pull up to speed from od or what?
Just curious how attentive you need to be when using it and if transmission damage could occur.

Hope ya'll had a merry Christmas!

Ryan Millikan ran his drag truck with od held on. It shifted normally, but it is a lot harder on the trans. He broke a number of intermediate shafts dead hooking 1500+hp, so I think you'd be fine if you accidentally left it on, but it'd be noticeable when you set off again.

Maybe lockup switch? I don't see how leaving od locked on could break shafts. As I recall it will only use 3rd for less than a second. I did that with mine a time or 2 and no damage occurred. Just slips the converter more

Mine will skip third when I leave it on.

He'd brake the intermediate at the line as soon as trans brake was released. It was the "taller" gearing of 1st plus od that they figured was breaking the shafts.; I mean I am talking about a 1500+whp pro street truck here. They're always harder on everything than our 1st gens.

So it was actually in overdrive in first and second? I guess I've heard that it was possible. Just didn't know anyone actually did it

I've done it in a Manual vb, in a 2nd gen. Didn't notice much different. Leaving the LU on is a different story lol.
