Best mild commonrail tune (per opinion)

Postby spencerdiesel » Thu Jan 28, 2016 5:35 pm

My machining instructor has an 04 cummins, 48re, 4wd, bare bones, bone stock work truck. He really would like better mpg, and a little extra power wouldn't be rejected. The thing that surprised me is he averages 15 or so mpg, and only 16 - 17ish highway. Cruises 2000 @ 70, so I guess that'd be 3.42 rear? The highway part doesn't surprise me because he cruises 70 w/ the he341. And I do realize the slushbox takes a little as well.

Anyway, I suggested straight exh (no dpf on early CR right?) and mild intake to start with. Anyone recommend a reasonably priced tune for a stock DD truck?

Correct nothing in the exhaust that has consequences for removing. No point in doing an intake of any sort on a mild truck (and only where the stock location is changed would I do anything about an intake. Same goes for the horn. Either leave it stock, or mill the shelf off, port it, and run a side draft). Tuning wise hp tuners is the best tuning option for 03-05 trucks, and iirc runs for less than $500 for the hardware, then price for tunes varies from tuner to tuner, but will give the best option for upgrading down the road if the horsepower bug bites

Thanks Dman. I'll look at that tune. How much mpg is lost at highway speeds with such a small turbo?

No idea. My 6.7 doesn't seem to care what charger it has. I averaged about the same mpg with the stocker, a 467, a 480, and a 476. It's very largely dependent on how you drive

Alright. Seems like the HP tune is the hot thing for the early CR

Changing topics slightly, but I didn't want to start another thread on it. He sold the auto truck and got an 05 6 speed with 12X,XXX miles. On the trip from Wyoming to NC he said the truck ate oil at the rate of 1 qt per 300 miles. Pulling the dipstick shows significant blow by, he said it doesn't start as good as his previous truck, and it smokes more. Probably the biggest hint is it's had a couple injectors replaced already.

These years are bad for injectors to go bad right? Any simple things that could be causing this oil consumption/blow by?

Piston rings, or the cylinders themselves are the only likely cause.

Probably a scored wall or broken ring from cylinder wash down on a hanging injector.

I was afraid of that. Doing brief google research, I found what seemed like a whole lot of CR 5.9 owners that were having massive oil consumption issues. Are most of the injector failures due to insufficient fuel filtration? A lot of people seem to be suggesting 2 micron filters

It could be contamination, not necessarily dirt, it could be water also. It only takes a speck of dirt to ruin an injector. I read that if you touch a new injector needle with your bare hand, it will not go in because of the oil from your skin and the tolerance is so tight. It could be due to overheating damaging the injectors, it could be they are just worn out too.

04.5 to about 07 were prone for ring breakage. They moved the rings higher on the piston those years( also bowl design changed)

This happened to me about 7k miles after NEW Bosch injectors were installed. 2 micron filter. I was able to claim fuel contamination on insurance but they totaled the truck after they found the blow by.

I told myself no more commonrails after this.

03-04 do not have the same issue.
