Getrag clutch question.

Postby Ramcharger87 » Wed Feb 08, 2017 3:48 am

Hi all. So I'm SLOWLY getting my 87 Cummins Ramcharger put together. I procrastinated long enough on buying a low-stall converter for the a518, that I stumbled onto a good Getrag 360 / 205 combo.

My question is, is there any reason NOT to use a basic replacement clutch set, like a Luc for example. The engine is in the 200hp - 500lb-ft range and the vehicle itself is light compared to a W350.

I have no issue running a South Bend or similar brand on high horsepower applications but Rock Auto has some killer prices on "stock replacement" clutch sets (under 3 bills for clutch set AND flywheel).

Do NOT use Luk. Get a stock 13" Sachs or go straight to Southbend or Valair.

The "upgraded" 12.25" Luks have a problem tearing the center out.

Who carries Sachs anymore??
I just visited Valair's site. Says they don't offer a Getrag replacement clutch anymore. 12.25" 4500 retrofit or 13" 4500 upgrade only.

Call Dan Valance @ Valair. The NV4500 1-14" input clutches should fit.

X 2! They can build any clutch you want. I have the 650hp ceramic which uses a NV5600 flywheel and have the stock Getrag. All they did is put the Getrag center in the ceramic disc.

So I contacted South Bend Clutch via email. Instead of Peter, i hear back from
MANSEIL WASHBURN, who is apparently the diesel manager now. I explained it is a bacically stock engine (200hp - 500lb-ft) in a lighter-than-stock vehicle. 4.10 gearing turning 37" tires. 4000lb max expected towing with possible moderate off-roading or back-country camping in the future. He "recommends" their new $1200 (not including flywheel) dual-disc street clutch!

I hope Peter is still around somewhere, cause this Manseil seems out of touch with what their customers need.

Call Dan at Valair. Trust me on this.

Dan will tell you not only is over-powering a clutch bad, but so is under-powered. Under-powered trucks tend to slip it more on take off or towing because it is so grabby.

I bet a 13" organic with 3600lbs pressure plate would be perfect.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I was able to locate a stock 13-inch Sachs today at Rock Auto (the last one they had in stock!). I was hoping to snag a Sachs flywheel while i was at it but someone beat me to the last one by 2 hours.

I had gotten a Sachs flywheel and clutch assmbly with the trans, so i just took the flywheel to the local machine shop for resurfacing. The guy behind the counter was impressed with the appearance of the flywheel and barring anything evil (like a crack) feels it should clean up with no more than .010" removed.

Yes he is. I talked to someone there a while back about a new clutch for my truck. For a single disk non-performance stock rated G56 clutch it was $900 without hydro's. Valair was $699 with hydro's.

I now have a Valair in my truck. The price difference payed for someone to install my clutch.
