D250 front clunk from forward to reverse - must be calipers

Postby Diesel » Tue Aug 09, 2016 9:25 pm

I have all new front end on my D250 and it drives amazing. The only thing I have that bugs me is a clunk from forward to reverse that comes from the front end. It sounds like the calipers are moving from front to back in their seats. The only thing I don't have installed are the rubber bands. I don't have them any more but I have tons of rubber bands. What exactly do I do with them and will that keep the calipers from moving front to back and clunking?

Are the mounting brackets worn where the caliper slides? Mine were. I had that clunk, and the bracket was so worn the outer pad would stick and only the inner would wear because the caliper wouldn't slide. Found some used better brackets and cured both problems.

I had that same problem on my high mile 93 D250, mine would also often split the retainer plate on the left side (the rear one) in the thin springy area. I agree that the caliper bracket is worn out on your truck.

My 92 w250 would drive me nuts over bumpy roads. They would clatter so bad unless I would touch the brakes. When I changed the front axle over the new one had much tighter caliper mounts and no more clunk. 8)

Good luck finding such a thing as a replacement caliper mount. Having caliper mount issues myself. Is it possible to weld/burn some extra metal onto the bracket and grind it to a tighter fit for the caliper?

I would try it. If its cast steel it would weld ok. Run a bead of 7018 on it and run her. :D Years ago I welded up a yoke that broke one ear off. I built it up and filed the bed where the u joint cap sat, drilled a hole for the hold down and ran it for a whole year plowing snow commercially.

Remps, I found a set, Bill Gilbert had them. He gets parts trucks and sells stuff. You could weld it up, just test fit, and allow clearance for when they get hot and expand. Mine were clunking like a SOB until I changed the brackets.

Yet another reason I need to invest in a welder. Would a cheapo 110V unit do the job, or would a stick welder do better for adding metal? I'll keep those parts in mind Pete, thanks.
