Would like some schooling on toyotas

Postby spencerdiesel » Wed Apr 12, 2017 3:33 am

Hey y'all, I'm really looking to get a second vehicle for a multitude of reasons. As far as the mini trucks, I've usually heard that the toyotas are the most reliable.

Saturday I'm going to try to go look at a '90 2wd my coworkers relative has. It was one owner, 5 speed, very clean, 112k miles and he says it's carb'd. I know 22re's came out in '85, and I thought the last year for the 22r was '87? Maybe the 2wd ones could still be ordered with a 22r for a time after that?

He's asking $3500. Do 22r's have timing chain guide problems like the re?

Thanks y'all

It wouldn't be hard to believe it has a carburetor on it in 90. Some folks just couldn't get their heads around EFI.
Personally, these days....with the amount of ethanol gas and its ability to kill fuel systems, buying a Toyota with a carburetor on it wouldn't be the best thing in my mind. There is almost no aftermarket support for the type of carburetor on the import that doesn't cost an arm,leg and at least one testical.

At 115k there should be no timing issues on that engine.....unless the oil hasn't been changed like it was supposed to be. What happens is the oil can sludge up behind the timing tensioner and let the chain slap the guides, busting them apart. It's easy to hear......start it up and listen,if you hear it......instant bartering chip.

I know nothing about them other than they existed at one time. Had a friend in high school that had a Datsun that him and his dad had two weber carbs on it......it was a death trap and would haul a$$. I don't know what they did to the little motor but it screamed.

Yeah they are steel with some sort of plastic coating. Those little trucks are fairly robust and don't really give a lot of trouble. Even the automatic trans trucks are tough. I've seen numerous with fluid that looked like motor oil and smelled like some sort of human waste runoff, still shift well and do their jobs. Only problem they actually have is that they kill a lot of power (much like our era dodge trans do) of the little motor.
The oil pumps will leak pretty bad (front of the engine/mounted on the exterior side of the timing cover) due to its mounting surface o-ring drying out and cracking. Also the exhaust manifold like to leak, usually from cracking or engine/manifold flange warping.....sometimes manifold to pipe flange.
Only electrical issues that are prevalent with them down here is the mass air meter likes to stick closed (more of a mechanical issue) and there's a master relay (can't remember it's proper name at the moment/located on the passenger side kick panel) that flakes out and won't run the fuel pump or efi.
That's about it really,or at least the things that stick out in my mind.

Sure are, I bought one for my 88 Suzuki Samurai. Big improvement from the Hitachi feedback carb that was on it from the factory.
