518 trans cooling

Postby 79Powerwagon » Tue Mar 28, 2017 1:11 pm

Looking for opinions on coolers for a 518.

I do not want to run an electric fan unit. Trying to keep as many electronics off my truck as possible.

Current setup is just the small factory cooler up front. Heat exchanger was rotted so I deleted it.

Has anyone tried a tube style with fins? Or Should I just stick a larger cooler up front?

Trying to stay on the cheaper side as I don't plan on having the 518 long term, but I don't want to burn it up either.

Truck is a 79 1/2 ton short wheel base weighing around 5700. Don't tow much with it but it does get hot rodded a good bit.

Thinking of something like this. I was showing off the other day doing brakestands and after the last one the trans stuck in 2nd gear.... had an odd smell for a second. Not like burnt fluid though. Went back to normal after I stopped and checked fluid.

If your not going with a fan mounted under body type. Go with a big one in front of the radiator. The one you posted a pic of I wouldn't waste money on it.
