Need Help Replacing Head gasket

Postby Collers9640 » Thu Jun 01, 2017 6:13 pm

My Head gasket started leaking the other day and needs replaced.
Im a scared to remove the head because the last time I removed a cummins head I thought I had drained out all the coolant but to my surprise when I pulled the head, coolant drained into the cylinders. Thankfully i only needed the short block was junk anyways.
So is there a way to ensure all the coolant has been drained? Like a port to pressurize or something?

I've always just took the lower hose off the radiator and that was enough.

I little coolant in the cylinder won't hurt a thing.....just wipe it out.

clean out the cylinders and change the oil. We change the oil anytime the head is off an engine. Doesn't matter if there is a lot of antifreeze that goes in the cylinder or a little, if you clean it out you will be fine. depending on how much is in the cylinder sometimes after I've cleaned them out I will wipe the cylinder walls down with oil and roll the engine over to make sure the cyl. isn't going to be a dry start. then put the head on.
