It took me 13 months to build my first house, from drawing up the blue prints to laying blocks, building, plumbing, wiring, finishing,
I saved a crap ton of money but I got old in that 13 months working 2nd shift and building all day, only labor I paid for was my cousin to dig my foundation and my septic hole.
I had 35k in the compleated 1,700 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath with the master in a loft with a bathroom, all open living room 32ft cathedral ceiling, the entire house was sheeted in western cedar 1x12 inside walls, shiplap ceiling/and 4 dormers and cedar siding out 12-12 pitch roof, all knotty pine floor, claw foot tub/shower breakfast nook and wrap around porch.
sadly 10 years later my uncle sold the land next to it and a truss business opened up 100 yards away, I am a quiet freek so I had to go before I did something stupid, so I sold it to my step sister for $ 115k, I felt like I did OK and moved back to the middle of the farm 1/4 mile away, put up a made to order double wide, put log sidding on it and a big open log beam log porch and a 30x40 barn never looked back, I have a good chuckle at tax time every year as I just did sneek in before the law changed about taxing double wides as houses, my taxes went from $3,200 a year for the house and a 2 car garage, to 600 a year for my house and the barn.
best thing I ever done was building my own house, 2nd best thing was selling it, my wife was sad because it was our dream house that we thought up out of our own heads and both our kids were born in it, but it was a high maintenance piece of property and house and now I can mow the yard in an hour and a half and then sit on the porch and sip sweet tea while watching the deer lick the salt block and drink out of the pond.
moral of the story, build all you can yourself for 2 reasons, the satisfaction of it and the fact labor is very high.
PS It would cost 3x what I had in my house to build it again with the cost of cedar alone.
