Did you need to use non ic delivery valves?

Yes. I used a non I/c pump but with I/c ksb (not important about the ksb, just didn't want another wire ran to shut down the advance)

So since my 79 is down I've decided to go ahead and just swap a complete ppump motor into this truck. Going to need it soon to start getting firewood for this winter.

Didn't want to have to pay/worry about conversion lines for the 24v.

Going to do a mild warm over on the engine. Head gasket, 60lb springs, Allen headbolts, 4k GSK, and whatever fuel plate mods/tuning. This is my first time in a ppump so it'll be a good learning experience.

Got the engine torn down. Unknown miles but the bottom end looks very good. Crosshatching still very much in tact.

Pulled the head off of the other engine I had, it had been replaced before and looks to be in better shape.

So it's parts cleaning time now. Will update with pics

Why are you pulling the 24v? You may have said before but I'm to lazy to go back and look. Lol

Just having to worry about the VP makes me not want to drive the truck. I really hate how it runs also. Stock is just too gutless and with the smarty the throttle is way too touchy.

That and I can't throw a bigger better tune on it without a spendy lift pump. Figure I may as well swap in a 12v. Can't go wrong with the simplicity and reliability. I may use the 24v someday. I also didn't want to have to buy conversion lines for a ppump. (And then worry about them cracking)

Swapping the 12v is the most cost effective for me right now.

Cleaned head, 60 lb springs, headbolts with moly lube torqued to 120, and cummins beige paint. Fuel plate ground, afc foot ground and flat washers on diaphram. 16* timing. KDP taken care of. Crank snout barely had any wear, makes me think fairly low miles.

That moly lube makes me a bit nervous. It's been the cause of a few broken headbolts in Cat engines. 120 ft/lbs was the most I was comfortable with. I'd bet 120 with moly is more like 140-150 with oil.

4k gsk and King rod/main bearings on their way.

Of course, one main bearing was knicked up in the package. Ended up reusing the best original.

160hp

Good thing I pulled the engine and trans cause the clutch was on it's last leg. Throw out absolutely smoked. Funny because it felt pretty damn good yet.

Well the engine is in and running.

Made a tone wheel that mounts on fan pulley to trick the ecm into thinking engine is running via cam sensor. Not accurate but allows charging/ac/cruise.

Adapted the APPS to the ppump.

Need to get the kill cable working.

Scrounging up some cash for a south bend OFE clutch

New south bend OFE is in.

Got it all buttoned up.

New engine takes some getting used to. Major change in driving habits.

Seems I am getting some air in the fuel- has a sputter after starting up from sitting.

Oddly it has almost no smoke. Plate/afc ground/full forward. Fuel pressure is 20-30 psi. It's not terribly weak off the line but I can tell it's not fueling like it should.

I also need to modify the throttle linkage for more travel.

How much timing did you go with? Have you played with the starwheel yet? Mine ran pretty much smoke free, and felt kinda weak till it made some boost. Gave it maybe 3/4 or 1 turn towards the motor and it's way better on the low end now.
Smokes moderately at wot pre-boost, but driven normally it's way nicer to drive now, no more pre-boost bog, and spools faster. Gets up to speed with less throttle input, and gained 2-3 kph top speed for some reason. I wish I'd done the 1 minute adjustment 4 yrs ago when I bought it.

I ended up at 16* timing.

I did go one turn on starwheel, though it looks like it's nearly all the way forward?

Didn't seem to make a huge difference.

I can't tell if it's just a different sounding engine or what because the turbo sounds different than it did on the 24v. It may be a boost leak that I'm not seeing.
