The FL series of trucks can handle a lot of abuse, the utility I work for has probably more than one hundred still in the fleet. The stock radiator will keep up, the only thing to look out for is when the truck gets to be about 14-16 years old, the radiator will give out. I've replaced almost every one at my location within the last year and a half.
As for getting parts, your friend may as we have all the part numbers needed when he goes into any parts house, as they are getting pretty bad about getting the correct parts when you go in asking for "this widget for this contraption", the heavy duty parts houses are worse yet, a lot of times they will ask for a part number anways. One thing that helps me out is if it has a Caterpillar, or Cummins, that's where I get the parts. All of the transmissions are Allison here, so I got to an Allison shop. Asking Freightliner for engine parts is hit and miss. A good way to get the correct parts is get on Cummins QuicksServe and make an account, then input the CPL off of the engine you need parts for. It's fairly accurate for getting part numbers, then you can shop around online and get the best deal.
