Your parts store of choice

Postby spencerdiesel » Thu Sep 28, 2017 8:52 pm

My friends got an fl70 with some kind of 5 speed trans and a melted p pump Cummins. He's going to build a mild (different p pump Cummins) 12v to stick in it.

Right now, bare block (bored .040 or .050 I think) , rods, crank, head and fuel system is what he's got.
He'll need upper & lower gsk kits, pistons/rings, maybe bearings and possibly valvetrain components.

Who's got reccomendations for "the" place to get p pump 12v parts decently priced? He's not a fan of online ordering but that cuts choice down a lil bit, and I think I can convince him to order online.

Thanks y'all.

Pure diesel power sells a good rebuild kit for just under a grand. Includes new pistons, rings, gaskets, seals and so on. You would have to order online though.

Find a place that can order this part line
https://www.paiindustries.com/company/productline.php
I've used this line several times and it's been great. No issues.

Much appreciated y'all! I'll show him the options and we'll go from there.

As a side Q, is the cooling system taxed more when the displacement of an engine is increased? It makes sense to me that would be the case with a throttled engine, but what about a diesel?

Thank you

The FL series of trucks can handle a lot of abuse, the utility I work for has probably more than one hundred still in the fleet. The stock radiator will keep up, the only thing to look out for is when the truck gets to be about 14-16 years old, the radiator will give out. I've replaced almost every one at my location within the last year and a half.

As for getting parts, your friend may as we have all the part numbers needed when he goes into any parts house, as they are getting pretty bad about getting the correct parts when you go in asking for "this widget for this contraption", the heavy duty parts houses are worse yet, a lot of times they will ask for a part number anways. One thing that helps me out is if it has a Caterpillar, or Cummins, that's where I get the parts. All of the transmissions are Allison here, so I got to an Allison shop. Asking Freightliner for engine parts is hit and miss. A good way to get the correct parts is get on Cummins QuicksServe and make an account, then input the CPL off of the engine you need parts for. It's fairly accurate for getting part numbers, then you can shop around online and get the best deal.

Thanks Ike, that's invaluable information for anyone who's parts shopping. He liked the idea of Cummins Quickserve so I think that's the approach he's going to take.

Is there a radiator (2nd gen, 7.3, 6.0 etc) that can find its way into that truck without rediculous fab work?
